5 cylinder diesel O.K. without engine shocks?

I don't have the proper tabs on my frame crossmember to receive the engine shocks that my new engine came with. I don't have a welder, and it's my observation that (I think) the engine stop that came with my 240D will match up to points on the 5 cylinder's case. Will the vibrations be tolerable with just the engine stop from the 4 cylinder, and with new engine mounts? Or do all 617's NEED the shock(s)? Thanks!

Try and see!

If your 617 is a smooth runner you might be able to get away with it but otherwise I could see it rockin out...

Is this going on a w123 body? The air filter housing is VERY close to the passenger shock tower so keep an ear out

Thumbs up

They're there for a reason, I agree... granted mine probably don't work.

It seems that plenty of 617's are running around with non-functional engine shocks. Some owners don't know the difference. RT

I put a motor in a 300sd & never installed the engine shocks on mine I couldnt tell any difference without em. Leave them off & see what you think. Dont waste all that time doing metal fab work.

I think I remember hearing those shocks are to reduce rocking when turning the engine off. But again I cant tell the difference & my engine & car is smooth with no shakeing.

The shocks are there mainly for comfort as one of the main complaint about diesels is the vibration. Without them however, there is going to be more stress on the frame. If it was me, if it was only a temporary thing I would be okay with it. In the long run I would worry about fatigue though.

Aren't the mounts intended to absorb "running vibrations" while the engine shocks are to absorb the wobble when the engine shuts down? Thats what I always thought......so not having shocks means it'd do more damage to the mounts and shake the car more when you shut it down.....

Awesome, thanks for the insight. I'll definately try it without, then, and retrofit it if I need to. It'll give me time to get a welder, if need be, or just mark the bracket locations and have a shop do the welding.

My engine swap project is done! It runs like a champ and I'm besides myself with joy at how much faster and smoother it is that the old 4 banger setup.

Oh so engine shocks are supposed to absorb some of that big jerk that comes when you shut off the engine? My car jerks quite a bit upon shut-off - does it mean the engine shocks are bad?

They'll always shake a little when shut down, the shocks only dampen it a little. If they are original I bet they're not doing what they once were capable of. Without them at all it'd be quite a shudder on shutdown, and would probably damage the rubber mounts after a while, especially as they age. Probably depends on how smooth the engine runs/the particular car, mine shuts off very gently, especially running on soy/veg fuel, practically no shake. On diesel its only slight. Our '83 runs rougher/vibrates more, and gives quite a clunk/shake when it shuts off.

It's definitely a big shake, though. Perhaps I should put that on list of things to improve. Is it easy to remove/install these?

I'd recommend getting a set of (small) box wrenches for replacing them, I took them off/put them on with normal wrenches, (I think the nuts are 8mm), it drained my patience having to re-position the wrench on that little nut each time to turn it half a turn. The worst part of the job is reaching the little nuts on the top and bottom holding them in and all the oil and slime thats probably on them, otherwise the objective isn't difficult. Overall I'd estimate it at a 2-3 hour job tops. The task to accomplish is simple, its just hard to get at them very easily, especially with large hands (like I have....) it can be a pain. Due to their cost ($40+ apiece), I'll probably never change mine. The time I took them off was when I changed my motor mounts, which are a necessary replacement every few years.
