I had 4 copper washers under my ALDA, BTW.

MBZs are fine cars but, remember they had to meet EPA for their era too.

Sidebar: A friend had a late 70's early 80's Chevy sport car of some sort. The manual shift linkage had a switch that was closed only in 3th and 4th gears. It was wired to the ignition system. Curious, we disconnected it and discovered that the car had a significant increase in perfomance...it stayed disconnected and we could only speculate that it was altering the ignition timing somehow to meet and EPA requirement for highway driving.

Back on topic...
It's well known that MB gassers are significantly detuned from their Euro counterparts and the diesels have EPA trinkets that the Euros do not have. Additionally, the Euro 240s used a completely different IP from the import verson. Since the 617 turbodiesel was relatively unheard of in Europe, it's hard to determine if there was ever a 'tuned' (read 'non-import') version.

I have seen posts where a small shim or spacer was used to raise the alda assy slightly, ie: compensating for a broken adj. screw or something.
if this works, than a shimmed alda might dump more fuel sooner, yet provide the full range of adjustment travel?
If I'm swerving like a grocery cart with "twitch-wheel" then nevermind.......

Sure is worth a try. Shim it heavily and then back the screw all the way off and make another attempt at it.

I think that you're right. IIRC, people have found different numbers of shims under the ALDA leading me to believe that they are a factory set-up adjustment of some sort.

Where to get shims?

Have acess to a lathe?

They would be super easy to make on a lathe (depending on thickness). Otherwise I guess you go to a junkyard.

How do you measure performance?

By reading other threads, it seems the final measure is the 0 to 60 time. What should be expected of a 617? Mine is all original (I know as I'm the original and only owner), sealed ALDA, etc. after 203k miles, my 0 to 60 time is consistently 14-15s. The only slow part is the initial couple of seconds waiting for turbo boost. I always thought that was the best I could expect. I am producing slight smoke at take off so I guess my ALDA should stay sealed? What kind of 0 to 60 times should a 617 produce?

14-15 is what it should be.
