One thing I love about diesel cars...

Despite some of the many frustrations which confront me involving the diesels, there is one thing which I love. Today at the gas station I went in to pay, and the cashier lady gave me a weird look and asked "that thing takes diesel?". "Yes ma'am" I replied. Before I left, she asked me a few questions about it, and it always reminds me to be grateful of the great car that I am driving.

My best one yet: "Wow, you got 34 gallons of fuel into that little car?"

It was hard to find good 300 Diesels in the early 80's for a good price.

Finally tried one that had 197k on it - high miles, was nice until someone fueled it with GASOLINE, mucked up the engine, and in process of removing and draining the gas tank, caught the gas on fire, so it was "old before its time" Still ran good at 80mph, but I passed on it.

I was filling up at the truck pumps one day when a couple guys filling up their box truck walked over and said, "Does that Benz run better on diesel or something?" And I said, "Yes as a matter of fact it does. It won't run on gas."

When I was driving in Oregon once (can't pump your own gas), the attendant wanted to put gasoline in my 300D. I stuck my head out the window and said, "Diesel, please"

The thing I love about diesels is I can mix my old differential fluid, trans fluid, old motor oil, and the veggie oil in the bottom of my fryer and burn it! The engine loves it! Gone 50K and no problems!

You should be able to pump your own diesel. As far as I've seen, it only applies to gasoline.

Well I didn't know it at the time. Even if I did know, it wouldn't have been worth it to argue with the attendant at the Flying J.

I went to a kwik trip once to fill up on the road. One diesel pump. I was filling up and some guy rolls in behind in a dump truck. The guy is just *****ing up a storm about people with their cars always hogging the only diesel pump when there are 7 other empty pumps. He was cussing, swearing, reving his engine and in general making a a$$ of himself. I dont remember what I exactly said to him but he became real quiet.

Not a bad one at all. It has three main advantages:
1. When it's cold I don't have to leave my warm car to go pump gas and my hands never have to smell of gasoline
2. It provides many entry level jobs for Teenagers and unskilled people
3. The effect on gas prices is negligible

Disadvantage is that one of these unskilled nitwits is likely to ignore the big red "DIESEL FUEL ONLY" sticker and fill your car full of unleaded, then want to call the law on you when you refuse to pay for his stupid mistake. Happened to me once in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey.

I have had people in trucks be annoyed by me going to the diesel pump too, one guy looked pretty mad, and whipped his pickup-truck around the station to the other side of the pump, got out and looked at me, heard my engine, and didn't look at me again. I bet he felt pretty dumb.

Many years ago I was driving from Philadelphia to NYC and I stopped in New Jersey to re-fuel...I was about to squeeze the handle when this guy comes running up yelling, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!" I told him I didn't realize I pulled in to the full service lane and apologized. Then he spotted my Texas license plates and explained that ALL lanes were full service--motorists couldn't re-fuel their cars; station employees had to. I asked him why, and he told me he "had no idea, but it suited him fine." Suited me fine to.....it's $%@#*& cold in New Jersey! Cost less than when I filled up (myself) in NY, too.....
