Yes I did and I'm sorry I've been very busy. The 240D pictures are the most complete as far as step by step instructions BUT it's 150 Pictures and I haven't had the time to reduce each one to the 65K limit. I took each picture at 2meg for detail.

Hopefully I will get to it and reserve the 30+ pages or so I will need to make the thread.

Dave, I was not trying to bust your chops on doing this... except it did seem that it would help some people immediately... but I thought maybe you had installed it on another thread which I had not found.... I will be studying it as I attack cleaning mine in situ... I don't have the guts to take the entire dash out myself... I would install an under the glovebox aftermarket unit or design one for the trunk.... Thanks for all the work of documenting as you did all that other work at the same time... Greg

I got through the first page and I'm so exhausted I need to take a nap. I thought these cars were suppose to be easy to work on?

They are but not this particular job. The only car that I have changed the evap out on that could be considered easy was a Honda Prelude.

Chops needed busting. I promised it a long time ago and never delivered. So you got me off my butt.

In order of difficulty of work on the W123

1. Transmission rebuild, depending on your skill level and tools. (I won't do it)
2. Engine rebuild.
3. Evaporator/heater core replacement.
4. Complete rear suspension rebuild.
5. Complete front suspension rebuild.
6. Figuring out the entire vacuum system THE FIRST TIME.
7. Replacing the front sway bar.
8. Cleaning all the wax out from around the "300TD" and "TURBO DIESEL"
9. All the rest.

Dave

How well did this work?

I have been thinking of cleaning my evaporator for the reasons mentioned, ie: cool but not cold air. My system was rebuilt this year but when on low I have ~40* at vent, but on high or auto more like ~60*. I am not really looking forward to opening the dash so I was glade to see some ways to clean out the evap. without doing that. Of course if this doesn't work I know what is next.
Westkill did your system work better after you cleaned it out? I like your approach using the air tool to clean out the fins!! I will be putting together my own "mini pressure washer" this weekend! Thanks for the discription.

I was hoping that someone that has gone thru the trouble could say how much improvment there was to the overall performance of their AC system. Thank you.

I completely rebuilt my 82 300TD AC system a few years ago AND coverted to R134 with a parallel flow condensor. My daughter has an OEM R12 system in her 83 240D. It cooled better than the R134 converted sytem in my wagon.
Due to the compressor failing 1.5 years later, I think due to the higher pressures of the R134. I replaced the compressor, flushed the system, re-rubbered the manifold hose and installed R12. It cools much better than the R134 setup. It does not cool as well as the 240D ONLY because the wagon has so much more volume than the sedan. Vent temps are the same.

Let me add this, the Ac system on the W123 is not the size you would find, in a car of its size, built today. On its best day brand new I don't think it would cool the way were cooled now a days. Just how things were done. For Texas the system works but on 100 degree days its always at full fan speed and max cold and I would not say that i ever get "cold" to where you turn it down. In the evening, once the sun is gone and the temp is below 90. We might turn it down. We rent a lot of car ( drive old cars and travel to the kids at school in rentals) I find the AC systems work better then any of the W123's I have owned.

Check your charge. You should have 40-44 degree vents on high.

I see the same thing on the rentals, Dave. The vehicle cools off in the Atlanta sun rather quickly. But, I don't get the sense that the vent temps are all that low.......I don't feel that they are below 45° or so........I'm wondering if you notice the same thing.

If so, then the insulation and the window tint must be a significant factor in the performance of the a/c..........rather than the cooling system itself.

Rebuilt this year...

Thanks for the replys. The system was reworkrd this year, new compessor and drier, flushed, pressure check, R134, On low fan speed 40 degrees, on high fan speed 55- 60 degrees. I am wondering if the evaporator could be clogged so that air is not circulating as well. I am heading out to work on it right now. I will post any success or surprizes when I get done!

To those who asked, yes cleaning the evap. helped alot. Just the sight of the black yuk coming out from under the car when flushing showed how dirty it was. I also tinted the windows with 25% tint. Still can see the mirrors at night and major difference with interior temps. Thanks Mike

Hi, I just cleaned mine while in the car (82sd). What I did was pull down the lower trim pieces on each side. On the drivers side you have a good view of the entire inboard side of the evaporator.I removed the floor mats and blanketted the floor
Thanks for great encouraging post on evap cleaning in car! So there is an opening in the evap box on the driver side? How do you access it? is that where you inserted your sprayer? Did you get any spray runoff into the car or did it all go out condensate drain?

Getting ready to do my '83 sd and wan to avoid surprises as much as possible Thanks
