I have a air tool attachment that is nothing more than a nozzle with a port on it where a small hose attaches and draws liquid in.(Advertised as a parts washer) . I made a wand out of 1/2" copper pipe about 14" long. Put an elbow on the end and flattened the one side a bit. I attaced it to the end of the blower with a piece of heater hose. Made a great angled mini sprayer. I then inserted the pick up tube into a good grease dissolver ( purple stuff etc) and attached my air hose. I stuck the wand in and fired away. A very effective power washer.
I started at the far end and worked toward me. I let the solution set then I put the pick up hose in a jug of HOT water and flushed again.. I repeated this 5 times. NOw the evaporator is shiny clean on the inboard side and I can only assume the outboard side.
What prompted this was I wasn't getting any water dripping under car with A/C on and it wasn't all that cold. Now I get puddles and the A/C is much colder. Incidently. When flushing I didn't see and water pouring out underneeth til I was on the 2nd application. It Was clogged good. I felt this was worth a shot first because the dash removal is big. HTH Mike

I have a w123 and need to conquer the A/C once and for all, and I would loooooove to NOT have to tear the interior apart to get it done of course. Would the w123 and w126 use the same evaporator? If so, would it be in a similar location/ have a similar juxtaposition? The In-Situ method is quite attractive indeed if it can be done in the w123 as you did it in your SD. That would definitely be the preferred solution if at all possible.

When I did mine I got alot of water out of the passenger side drain and not more then a steady trickle out of the drivers side. I posted on here in a new thread about the experience. (success...sortof). Any way before I even started I replaced the drain on the drivers side because the foam fell apart. I used clear tubing so I can see what is coming out. I also hooked up the shop-vac to this drain and sprayed into the evap housing to try and get things moving along. I shop-vaced inside the housing from the passenger side also. I accessed the evap through the blower moter housing after I removed it. I am getting cooler temps from the vent on high speed but I have to run it on low then high, then low... takes awhile. Oh yeah this is with the main air vent shut to 100% recirculating. I reinsulated the expansion valve with new foam insulation and cleaned the ETR switch probe off. I am getting ther but I'm not sure what else to touble shoot, still searching this board and the manuels for ideas. I think I have a good charde as I get 40* at the vent with 92* ambient and low fan speed. I think I may have to go with plan"B"..... dig into the dash. If it was just me I would be ok with it and work it out but sometimes I carry my 17mos. old around and these 90-90 days in the Carolinas can be brutal.

When looking at the evap housing from the drivers side I can see the front of the evap, but I wasn't sure about spraying water from that side as it looks like the run off will run down the vents. Any suggestions? Also, it seems like both drains should be flowing the same, is that true?

If so, then the insulation and the window tint must be a significant factor in the performance of the a/c..........rather than the cooling system itself.
Vent temps can't be any lower that 38-41 degrees. I figure the diffence is volume of air movement. In the MD80 I can turn on one AC pack and the supply temp to the cabin is 40 degrees. The aircraft does not cool very well here in Texas. If I turn on both AC packs, The aircraft cools a lot better due to the increase in airflow. Not temperature change. I think the new cars have a higher airflow at the normal AC temps of 38-41 degrees.

Also I notice a big differnce between the 240D and the 300TD. The wagon
has so much more volume to be cooled than the sedan. I feel the movement of hot air from the back of the car while driving.

Mike,

Wondering if you still have this contraption and if you could post a picture of it? I'm about to redo my AC and am QUITE relieved to see that the evaps rarely fail....I'm going to replace my compressor, flush, fill and possibly add a high/low pressure switch if I go with 134a and see how it works...before I do the dash swap....so I would at least like to clean the evap. If the system bleeds out I'll worry about the replacing the evap when I do the dash swap.

Next to research how often the heater cores fail...

Thanks in advance!

That's my take on it too. I did three of them and with all the work it takes to get to it, on the last one I even replaced the heater coil even though it was fine. I just wanted it to stay in place for the next 10 years.
