European model diesel

What would be a good price to pay for a euro model 1986 300d, 6cyl, automatic in average condition. Whats the pro's and con's of owning.
Not too familiar with diesels. Search of the net provide almost no information on this year and model, someone here must have owned one in the past that can provide some insight.

I might suggest that one should try to evaluate the vehicle as if it were a gas engine, then add about $1000 for the diesel.

You see, if you were to buy a brand new model, a diesel engine is about a $3000. option, maybe more.

'86 is the W124, if if is a Euro, it has already been through the EPA/DOT certification, and is in your area for sale right?

Hardly any cars came into the USA after 1986 because the value of the DM changed as regards the US Dollar, and it would not make sense to think of bringing an '86 over her because the cost of importing it would be far far more than its market value. see www.foreignborn.com

If it really is a good one and the conversion has been done well it might be worth a look, if the price is good. (I don't know much about the W124 diesels, though

Good car

The euro w124 300D sans turbo are great cars, it is the same OM603 motor and is identical to what you will find in Fed versions of the 603 86-87 barring the turbo etc. Without the turbo it will be slower than a US car but still faster than a OM617. It is also quite likely to run much cooler than a turbo car and this may be a huge benefit since it will likely have the #14 cyl head. No turbo should give you EGT's of >350 deg less than a turbo motor....much longer life too.

Good luck,

There wasn't an 86 us model 300d. They did sell the 300sdl which has the same motor (but turbocharged). I guess you could say the euro is more reliable because it has more simplistic parts and you probably don't have to worry about a new head. As always the current condition of the car plays a huge roll in its future reliablity.

Climate controls.

If it has a manual climate control system and crank windows that would be a huge plus. Also, I think the sheetmetal is zinc coated on the '86 and newer cars? Is it rusty?

Jay.
