What is needed for a proper Brake Job?

What is needed for a proper Brake Job for all 4 wheels?

From what I know:

1) Pads
2) Rotors
3) Wear Senors but how many?

anything else that I'm missing? What brand of pads and rotors? I seem to be getting conflicting info on which brands are truly OEM.

Also, how much would the cost normally if you were to have this done at a shop?

I'm considing doing the job myself in the future as I've done the front brakes in the past on my Nissan Altima.

Thanks,
PaulW

Indy cost

I had my brakes done by an indy recently. I had to replace both front calipers (one completely seized up), master cylinder, pads and rotors all around, DOT 4 fluid...$1500..OUCH. however, my spousal unit argued that, since it is a safety-related system, she'd feel better if it were done by someone who did it for a living. I think the parts alone would have run about 800 but most of that cost was for master cylinder and 2 calipers.
I think that the pads and rotors installed would have been around 2 franklins.
clint.

Two sensors per side, fronts only. Performance Products has the rotors for $50 each, pads $40, master cylinder $98 and calipers $265 for my car. Just use that as a starting point, FastLane is probably a better price and you would benefit from shopping around. How about rebuilding the calipers?
I just noticed you didn't say anything about calipers and master cylinder. I did the front pads and sensors on my car for aprox $50.

Thats why I added that I later noticed that you didn't have that on your list. I wouldn't rebuild calipers unless yours were leaking or stuck.

You'll need front wheel seals if you replace the rotors. I suggest replacing the brake hoses too.

Do you mean the "wheel oil seal"?

Isn't there some sort of self-locking bolt that needs replaced too?

If you are going to do the right job, you should be repacking the bearings with grease. To do that, you need to remove the inner bearing from the hub. This will typically destroy the grease seal and a new one is recommended.

The calipers are retained by two self-locking cap screws that the FSM suggests are one time use only. Many folks use them again.......sometimes with a touch of lockite. They aren't going anywhere when torqued to 80 ft.-lb.

All of your questions are covered in the archives. Do a search under "brakes" and you'll be reading for hours.

Ok thanks for the tips on searching the archives. I did do a general search and didn't find what I was looking for but I didn't search the archives.

Mercedes dealers sell Textar brake pads. I'm not 100% sure about the rotors... I'll have to look at mine if it's stamped somewhere and get back to you.
