Knock can come from bad injectors too..
The noise seeming to come from the front might indicate the vacuum pump or the crank pulley. The crank pulley fits over two dowel pins and can sometimes hang up during instal and feel like it's all the way home. White smoke is incomplete combustion diesel gases which should clear as the motor warms if all else is okay. Loud knock along with white smoke does point to bad fueling. .

W/ the 617s I think you can get away w/ up to 10% rug.

Drain the fuel and put some fresh diesel in there. That gasoline is hard on diesels.

Congratulations.
You also can run it from a gas can under the hood for testing. If you use the same threads to post about this it will be easier to follow. Use advanced search and search for threads in your name or click your name and it will give an option to search for threads in your name. |

Any links or more info on converting a wrangler? Im wondering what years, extra parts, etc to do it. That temps me to sell my Cummins and convert a nice Wrangler:-)

Thanks for all the info, I believe the PO of this jeep ran it for a while. I think the fuel in the tank is just old and there might be some water in it. I don't think there is any RUG in the tank. I might just run it off a container of fuel from the engine compartment. I was not sure if there was a pump on the motor or at the tank. I'll try it and see what happens.
As for a link to converting a Wrangler to this configuration.... I looked and could not find any. I bought this jeep with the motor already in it (they just did a bad job of mounting it in the frame). The adapter to the tranny looked good tho and most of the lines seemed to be there. The only problem is the oil pan is directly over the front differential. I plan to lift the jeep to corret this issue. Last edited by 5cylturbojeep; 07-23-2006 at 01:52 PM. |

With the spring over lift it will put about 5 in between the motor and diff. If I put a lift spring on it will lift it even more. I might even do a shakle reversal. I saw a cherokee with the same motor installed it was a 2 wheel drive though. I believe where there is a will there is a way...

fuel consumption
Can anyone tell me how much fuel the 617 motor should use? I used a 1 liter container and it only lasted a minute or two. Could this be contributing to the white smoke? Maybe something needs to be adjusted. Any thoughts would be great.
On a positve note the jeep moved under its own power (the tranny worked) ![]() |

I am not sure what or where to adjust the IP or any of that stuff. I just thought it would get better run time on that fuel. As for the conversion. The parts were all there: adapter plate (it looks like they just welded a solid 3/8 in thick piece of aluminum on and drilled some holes for it to mount to the stock Jeep 3 spd auto tranny). I had to make the motor mounts, I used some hydraulic filled mounts and made the bracket to the frame and to the motor. The Jeep radiator is used and the tranny cooler. It is set up for a/c but I will worry about that after it is on the road as a DD.
The tranfer case is still connected or I would be less interested in finishing it, LOL. I will be interested in putting an intercooler in it after it is on the road also. |

Return line? of course I.... Didn't.... I didn't know about the rate of return kinda like investment property ehh.
so much for me thinking something needs to be adjusted really badly. I'll have to try that next time maybe it will not smoke as bad or even quieter and smoother. |
