Brake problem

The brake pedal went to the floor the other night on the way home. Now I can't seem to target a problem. When the brakes died, the car would still stop after the pedal dropped to the floor, just not well (generally means a leak). I pumped the brakes several times and they came back to full pressure (as they are supposed to). But after a few minutes they went to the floor again. When I got home, I pumped the brakes and searched for a leak near the calipers and all over the brake lines and found nothing. I drive my car up and down the driveway a couple times a day just to test the brakes and they seem to work fine. I can't risk driving it. I have some time this weekend to go to the junkyard to get parts and I hope to get it going again. I suspect the master cylinder (it is all rotted and rusty). Any ideas?

Sounds like the seals in the master cylinder are shot. Time for a rebuild or replacement.

Check the reservoir and determine that it remains full. If so, then the master cylinder is the culprit. If not, and one of the chambers is empty, you've got to find the leak.........don't bother with the master yet.
