Door Window Jammed Need Help to Fix

My right front door window jammed about 1/2 way and can not be moved. I took off door panel and I can see broken pot metal part.

Where do I start to take it apart? There is very little space in there to work.

Assuming that you have power windows, can you get to the bolts that hold the window motor in place? If you can, taking the motor lose will let you move by hand the window mechanism. The regulators aren't difficult to change. Check both window guide felts to make sure the window glass can move up and down easily. This puts less stress on the new regulator.

You need to try and reach up in there to remove the fasteners that attach the regulator to the window support. Once you do that you can manually put the window in the up position. After that is accomplished you should be able to remove the regulator.

There are 2 10mm bolts on either end of the metal piece that runs along the bottom of the glass (I'm assuming you have a 123). It is easiest to get at them if the window is about 3/4 down. Look up in there with a flashlight and try to get to the bolts. Once you free the glass you can manually raise it to the top and tape it in place (use some good duct tape). That will allow you to begin taking out the regulator. It's not bad - I swapped all 4 power regulators for manuals this spring.

Don't forget to replace your plastic vapor barrier - mine were all present but were in such bad shape and thin that I bought some heavier plastic and cut it to fit. A can of 3M spray trim adhesive and your good to go.

I was a dummy and forgot to mention that the subject car is a '80 300SD (116) with power windows.

Do a search on Window Regulator and you'll come up with my post.
116 regulators are easy and fairly cheap.
Look at the bottom rail (that the slider rides in) for damage or you will just be replacing, replacing, replacing... While in there check the door lock vacuum fittings & weep holes (door drains). Also lub the widow slider rail and check the bottoming out pad adjustment.
A used regulator with motor is a $40 - $70 item in my area.

In the meentime, I believe a 18 1/2" long 1" x 1/2" stick will hold the window up and allow you to lock the car.

Exactly what is the window regulator? Is it the die cast part with the gears and arm that raises and lowers the window? Is it what the motor is bolted to on power window cars and what has the window crank attached on manual window cars?

Well, it might be die-cast on the W116, but it's usually stamped on the later vehicles.

Correct.

OK, I got the broken regulator out. It was easy after I practiced getting one out of my parts car.

However, I had to unscrew the motor from the regulator and I can't get the motor out because its in blocked from sliding back by the window channel.

The motor is OK and doesn't have to be replaced but it looks like it is going to be a bear to screw the motor onto the replacement regulator when both are in the door. I looked at the brain gear URL but that had piks from a different model so it wasn't much help.

Any suggestions?

I seem to recall pushing the glass all the way up and keeping it up with a couple of pieces of 1" x 2".....cut to the perfect length.....doing the work on the regulator.......and then allowing the glass to come back down to engage the track.

YMMV.

Brian,

The window glass is all the way up. It stays there by itself. Its still hard to get to the window lift motor.

MB should have made an access panel in the door to get to the window lift motor.

It sounds as if the W116 is much more difficult. The W126 is not a problem once the glass is out of the way.
