Low MPG in a 1982 300SD?
I have a 1984 300SD which averages 21/26 MPG on either diesel, SVO, or a blend. I recently got a 1982 300SD which is only getting about 18/22 MPG on regular diesel. I hcae cleaned up the engine, injectors, etc a lot since I first bought the car, and I can't figure out why the fuel economy isn't better than this. Any ideas?

I've had cars that get poor mileage and, after adjusting the ALDA, replacing injectors, checking/replacing the air filter, checking for leaks etc., etc. could not increase the mileage. At least not a substantial increase.
I've been told that some get good mileage and others don't but have never had an explanation as to why. Cheers, Bill |

have you checked your odometers against the mile markers?
there could be error in one of them causing the big difference. the one getting the better mileage seems exceptional, the other one about right. depends on your driving habits too. and are they both using stock diameter tires? the difference could be illusionary. tom w

I upgraded the tires on both cars from 195/70/14 to 205/70/14, but the last time I check the MPG on the "worse" car was before I got the new tires on it...
I will recheck it now, and will also keep an eye on the mile markers as suggested. If I get the same findings, does anyone have ideas for what I can do to try to improve the MPG? Thanks |
