No Reverse anymore - 91 350SDL
Ok
My transmission vacuum line got disconnected during some repairs and caused hard shifting. It was driven a few times like this until my brother and I had time to look at the problem. Knew it was vacuum related but family, other priorities prevailed. Maybe they shouldn't have. The vacuum line has been reconnected and the forward gears shift smooth as butter. Problem is, reverse is no longer functioning. Did I trash the gear (which makes no sense), or is this something really stupid? Thanks Bob

other information : when put into reverse there is an ever so slight lurch backward..then stops as if something is holding it back. Then, no amount of gas will make it move, NOR will it move by pushing it.
put it in neutral, and it can be pushed. In fact Reverse works like park. If on small incline will roll back and lock just as it would in park without the emergency brake on.

No vaccum issue would make the transmission not enguage in a gear.
Maybe the linkage got moved? Check to see if it is indeed going into reverse and not still in park or neutral. |

Queer, I'm interested in the answer too... I found a NICE '89 560 with no reverse. All four others work fine...

I agree with John.
The linkage is not adjusted properly and the transmission remains in Park while you believe that it's in Reverse. It's behaving just like it's still in Park........one click away from Reverse. Pull the shifter down toward neutral..........try to feel a transmission detent below the current "reverse"...........and see if you get reverse. |

Ok tried that (or rather brother without forum ID tried it).
it clicks, it leaps like it's in reverse, but give it gas and it's like the brakes are on. Rev it and it feels like the car is bogged down/under lots of load.

It might be rebuild time. Post this in tech help. Maybe do a search on your transmission 722.361

When you say that you "tried that"............where was the gear selector during this process........in "N"...........or between positions??
With the selector in "N", can you push the vehicle........will it roll? |

Brian, it rolls fine in neutral, gear shifter was moved incrementally about 3mm at a time to try and get R to engage (give or take of course).

slipping/slow engagement of reverse
That's what I found yesterday. The distinction here is mine occurred over the space of a few days and was precipitated by fixing the transmission vacuum line which eliminated hard forward gear shifting but also eliminated the reverse gear altogether. Before this week, the transmission would engage into R instantaneously (unlike my TD which does take a few seconds and sometimes some gas to engage). If something just 'snapped' then i would've expected R to disappear quickly, not degrade quickly but that may just be my lack of knowledge of auto trans.

It still appears to be a linkage issue of some sort........not allowing full pressure in reverse so the clutches are slipping. |

Thanks BC. Anyone have diagrams of the linkage, etc. ? unfortunately FSM is very limited in this area.

You could always disconnect the line that you reconnected. Yes, you might get your hard shifts back, but hey...who knows, you might get reverse back too.
