617 very low on oil.........now down on power.........
Well, I ran out of oil in my car and now it wont quite make it up hills from a dead stop. Does anyone know what it would take to drop a nice chevy straight 6 engine in it?

A big shoe horn.
That car was too well engineered anyway.

Are you just guessing it's bad or have you really checked it out?
How bad is the blow-by? Is the camshaft scored? Did you do a valve adjustment? Did you check the compression? Did you make sure it's not just a plugged fuel filter? |

If you don't hear loud knocking sounds maybe only turbo noticed the loss of oil. Can you spin the compressor impeller with your fingers? DON'T GET CUT!

Transplant
One virtue of the 5-cyl diesel engine is that it lives longer than the bodies, which rust out up north. Which means that they can be found here and there, now and then, up north, attached to bodies that aren't inspectable anymore. I've seen 300's with engines that start right up sell for $750, because the body couldn't be inspected. Salt damage.
That amount of money won't even get you started on a 6-cyl chevy transplant. I've done a few transplants in my foolish youth: 289 Ford into 1962 LandRover 88, Volvo B20 into Triumph TR4, and have done many conversions of powerplants in workboats and yachts. Unless you know someone who's done the conversion and has a reliable log of the jobs and hours, you really don't know how long it will take. But unless you have access to a shop with milling machines and a fairly longbed lathe, expect it to be expensive. The business of putting small-block chevy engines into Jags was an okay idea because the Jag engine was so short-lived and expensive to rebuild that many okay Jag bodies were sitting around engineless. Also, a XJ6 with a 350 chev went faster than stock. seo |

You need to find a good used engine. Where are you located?

Sounds like you're good to go.
The main reason I asked is that I have one. I posted it in the "Cars" forum a while back, but need to get back to the people who showed any interest. I've been away on business a lot, and still haven't gotten rid of it. It's also a '83 300SD and runs great, but has been hit in the rear and a lot of the parts on the car need attention, so it has essentially no value. But I'd hate to see the engine wasted at the junkers. |

before you do a Chevy conversion check that the bell housing will fit. I understand that the MB trans. hump is just slightly too small to accept the Chevy bell housing.
Check out the 5.0 Ford engine. I think it is lighter, narrower, and the housing smaller. Let us all know if it works. I am looking at putting a 5.o in my 450slc. |
