After 1000ft elevation, power loss and dies
Does anyone know how to trouble shoot this, after climbing from 1500ft to 3000ft, i pull onto a side road, my idle and oil pressure then drops, and then finally stalls. after a 20 seconds, i restart, runs a little rough, but gets me the rest of the way, with less that 100% of normal power. Could my alda be misbehaving?

Could be the ALDA most likely or one of its control components.
http://dieselgiant.com/mercedesaldaboostsystemservi.htm But a low idle would not cause a low power off idle. Could also have some clogging in the fuel system. Check the ALDA first then the fuel dilevery system.

How to tell RPM without tach? I think both of my cars idle to high.

Your ALDA has nothing to do with your issue.
The ALDA is a limiting device and serves only to restrict the maximum amount of fuel available to the rack. It has nothing, whatsoever, to do with idle. This is handled strictly by the governor. As you increase in altitude, the engine gets less air. But, at idle, a diesel has about 20X the available air than it can possibly use. So, the altitude change is not your issue. It's just a coincidence that the engine is not running well............the basics of fuel filters and injector nozzles need to be attended to to find the culprit. A diesel stalls because it doesn't get the fuel that it needs. You can take the ALDA off the engine completely and it will still stall, if it's problem is elsewhere. |

I think he has 2 different problems. Defective ALDA system can cause low power, but something else is to blame for the idle. I think its a clogged fuel screen/filter at least.

Banjo bolt
Giant, Thats a great write up by the way, but i already cleaned my banjo bolt hoping that was my problem, but no remedy found. It was real dirty though, but cleaning wasn't the fix i needed. What are some of the other caused for the over boost protection to get tripped?? It is real strange becasue later on, back at 1500ft elevation, it runs great all over again. I am quite confused. This is all about the 1979 by the way. I've taken the 80 up over 8000ft and it did it like a champion.

Could be. I only went by the description of a problem at idle. We may not have the full story about problems at speed.

Yes I agree. More often than not, many details needed are not present.

details
at speed, it ran with i'd say 90% of normal at 300ft. After turning off the highway and slowing down to 10 - 15 mph, it ran rough. When full stop, idle was very rough and died. i rolled it in N out of the way, waited 10 15 seconds, fired right up. Drove it about 40 yards and parked for 2 - 3 hours. After a good rest, started and ran just as normal.
Is there anything i'm leaving out? just ask if there is anything else that would help.

I agree that this issue is not related to altitude. 3000 feet isn't enough to have much effect anyway. Start with the things Brian recommended, it may be something basic.

3000ft should not affect engine performance.
My engine only starts to feel the effects of thinner air/altitude around ~9,000ft altitude. Around the 9500 mark it starts to smoke an misfire pretty bad. 10,000+ and it barely idles. I take it up pikes peak every so often and it will make it's own white/grey/black cloud above 13,000ft. |

it seems like i could be a fuel problem, but it NEVER does it at anyother time. Is there any way to test the temp gauge? could it be overheating when i'm going up the hill and i just dont know it? Would taking the alda off to trouble shoot it be a bad idea? I have read a lot about removing them, but are there any complications in re installing it?
