Anywho, the pick 'n pull chain around here has numerous 126 diesels, and there are three branches within my range. If I get away from this for under $100 and some labor, I'll be doing fine. I'm relieved it's the turbo and not something deeper inside the engine.

Good call, I'll check it out. I was missing one when I bought it, there's some slight damage on the passenger side and the part of the fender that the eyebrow covered had a ding in it -- must of knocked it off in the minor bender.

Lucky me, the new eyebrow covered up the damage nicely.

I'll be happy to keep an eye out but, uhhh, hate to show my ignorance (this is my first Benz), is that the model number that'll be on the trunk lid or is it the series number?

Sorta like my 325i beemer is an E30, but you don't know that unless you own one, pretty much.

The pick and pulls don't usually get the more desireable models. There's a couple of specialty MB dismantlers that'll outbid the low dollar pick n pulls. You knew that though, of course.

There is a real good dismantler not far from my place and as luck would have it, I managed to get in good with the owner accidentally. I was driving several blocks away from the place and a woman in front of me made a left turn between some grassy, tree lined medians right into a late model Benz, who had no choice but to hit her.

Turns out the MB was being worked on at the dismantler (also a garage) and the driver was the mechanic who'd just fixed the tranny. The guy was beside himself, I told him, "no worries mate, the lady was clearly at fault."

I asked him if he worked at Euro and he brightened up. I told him I'd bought parts there and he saw my cell in my pocket and asked if I had the number, as he had no phone. Turns out I did, and I called his boss and talked to him first to break the news from a neutral party, telling him there was absolutely nothing his man could have done to avoid it.

It was a small bit of help, but that and my statement to the officer on the scene endeared me to the guys. Life's funny.

Anyway, I could inquire if they have something you want that could be UPSed to you.

Your '81 SD is a 126 chassis.

The 123 chassis is the 240D 300D 300CD and 300TD. 82 and up 123 300 series had the turbo 617 engine. The 240 is the N/A 4 cylinder diesel. The 123 also came in gasser models, the 230 and the 280.

I dream of u-pull-it yards. Every junk yard around here is way too frightened of idiot customers who might kill themselves or worse, try to walk out with something. Of course, Potomac German Auto is just down the road and they are more than glad to pull anything you want off something in their yard, but they don't have too many 123 or 126 chassis in stock right now...

I dont know if it has anything to do with the turbo going kaput on his car, but recently I found out that the oil return line from the turbo was split on my car.
I sure did wonder why the car was leaking so much, could this be a cause of his lack of oil to the turbo?

$1400? Hah, you got it for a bargain. Yours looks just beautiful. That car will serve you with safety and comfort for YEARS ahead. It was a very wise purchase. They are also constructed with an eye towards making the mechanic's job easy and straightforward. SIR NIK has an '84 300SD and he told me he did the brakes in 2 hours, and he took on a familyu member's '84 Cadillac, same job took him 10 hours.

In 2 days I will have had mine for 10 years. It's had issues, air con especially! and depreciation was HUGE! But even now, it runs fine.

Give yourself...and the car you bought...some credit. Both deserve it

Whoa, that's rough. I guess I didn't know how good I had it. You can't always find what you want but when you do, oh man the price is right. Such as the headlight bezel I got, in great shape, for $20. The dismantler wanted $65. I got a front turn signal lens for $15 I think, might have been $25. Seemed like a good price to me. Of course, I looked for those two items on about 10 previous visits w/ no luck. Every time I go, I have a mental list of things I could use that aren't urgent, to look for while I get the more common, needed part I came for.

These places charge $2 admission. I think that's partly to cover the many people who need some tiny item that they'll just put in their pocket. I never buy new fuses (spade type, for my beemer) or bulbs, the small ones. Plenty there that'll wind up in the crusher eventually. The price? $2 admission fee. Also, hose clamps and tire stem caps.

Where do you live, BTW?

That's something to look for and check out, just on general principle. Good tip.

Well thanks, it IS looking better all the time. For the first few months, I thought I'd bought a headache. The driver's seat had some broken springs, the seat belts didn't retract (small issue but a pain), the passenger side mirror was busted, water in the trunk and on the rear floor (soaked), no inside light, no dash lights, both front seat switches broken, both rear windows non operational.

I've fixed most of it (trunk still leaks some) and the day I learned how to adjust the alda was a good day. Really boosted my acceleration. If I could just get that trunk totally dry, I'd be a happy camper.

Trunk leak? Been there.

Hmm. The inside and trunk leak might be from the rear window seal (major pita to r/r).

The trunk leak could be that, or the trunk seal OR the taillight/taillight seal, water can come in through there.

Those leaks are difficult to source. I took it to the SF dealer who replaced the taillight and it still leaked. A good way to source the leak is to have your girlfriend get inside the trunk of the car with a flashlight, then close the trunk and you spray water from the hose all over the trunk of the car.

I learned about this the hard way, the SF MBZ dealer couldn't even fix the trunk leaks on mine, but it finally was somehow fixed. They went by trial and error

Great that you are bringing the car back little by little. That's hard to do on a budget, but you will not regret each improvement. The early W126 diesels were really built to last (so were all the 126 diesels, except the 350SD, and gassers.

Rain is coming soon! Believe it or not, clogged sunroof drains can cause leaks into the car around the windshield.
