Oil Cooler (Again)
Hi Guys, I know the oil cooler post has been done to death, anyway I wanted to ask a few questions. My Oil cooler in my 85 SDL (engine is out of an 83 SD) never gets warm, and I mean NEVER, I drove it for 1 hour city driving and 1 hour highway driving and it was cold last night. So the oil must never get above 110.
However after changing my starter in my 85 SD, I started the car up and before it was even warm I had a puddle of oil leaking out of the oil cooler, when I tried to remove the oil cooler the top hose came of ok, the bottom hose took the threads . So my question is, how can the oil cooler be leaking oil if the engine wasnt even up to temperature. The oil was definitly comming out of the oil cooler and not the hoses, (I blew air through the oil cooler once i had it removed and there was a leak.) Is there an easy way to remove the stripped aluminium threads from the lower oil cooler hose? has anyone repaced the MB hoses with an all hydraulic hose setup What were the fitting sizes used in the process? Thanks.

The oil cooler will still have pressurized oil in it when the engine is running, even if the oil is not flowing through it.

The oil flow through the cooler is also controlled by a thermostat IIRC. My oil cooler gets hot pretty fast after running a bit. Check the threads on the cooler. If the threads are stripped in the cooler, I believe you will need to replace it. I would check with Jeremy in Oklahoma, or another wrecking yard before buying a brand new one.

Yes the threads on the cooler are stripped and the cooler is useless but can I save the oil cooler hoses, that is the question, If i have to replace the hoses Ill just go with an entire aftermarket setup.

Yes, you can keep the hoses, just clean the threads. Usually a small flat head screwdriver like the kind used for jewelry repair will get the stripped thread metal out of the hose fitting threads.

if the rubber is questionable on them, you can take them to a hyd. shop and they will replace it for cheap. this way you could T in a temp gauge
