New To0 the FAmily!! With '84 300 SD and Valve re-adjustment concerns
Whats up guys; My name is Tony!
First off i would like to say, that im totally addicted to you guys. Your forums have a ton of information and I would be on this thing for days. And it was a major deciding factor in me getting the 1984 300 SD yesterday. Anyways i was thinking about giving it a DTY tune up. Like Diesel purge, radiator flush and changing all the fluids and filters. I also wanted to do a valve readjustment, but haven't a clue to how to do one of those. I tried looking it up, but nobody has specific instructions on how to adjust a 5Cyl engine. Like is there an order that you adjust the valves? From one to five? Or one and three together or something like that? Or rotating the shaft when you are done with one. But yeah much thanks in advance to anyone that can help me Bie Tony |

Congrats on the new purchase. That sounds like a good plan of action regarding your tune-up there. Make sure you use a good properly rated diesel oil like Chevron Delo 400, or Shell Rotella T. Get a good oil filter, use one of the OE brands such as Mahle, Hengst, Mann, or Knecht. Make sure the transmission fluid meets Dexron/Mercon III specs. Since you're changing all the fluids, that means you're including the differential and power steering too, right? When you add coolant after the radiator flush, either use MB Coolant from the dealer, or Zerex G-05 made by Valvoline, or Peak Global Life Time coolant. Those are the only MB approved coolants out there. Here's some guides on adjusting valves This one's for the 240D, but the 300SD is the same procedure, just plus one cylinder. http://www.jaimekop.com/240D/ValvesFuel/valves.html And one by our very own DieselGiant http://www.dieselgiant.com/valveadjustment.htm Again, welcome. ![]()

I agree with you about this forum. I have read it every day, even stuff that I don't need to know.
For valve adjustment...much like any car or truck....unless you have at least a handle on some mechanical aspect of engines.....be very careful or just have a friend, with some knowledge, to give you a hand one day. You probablly won't need his help again after you do it one time. Diesel Giant has a really useful pictorial of a valve adjustment. http://dieselgiant.com/valveadjustment.htm Good luck.

Valve adjustment timing/order?
Thanks guys!
I'll be sure to change the Differential fluid and power steering fluid and filter. And for the Valve adjustment, do you adjust the valves in a certain order? Or is it just 1-5? My Dad keeps talking about some sort of timing. I am not sure what he is talking about. Diesel Giant I think says, as soon as you are done with one valve go to the next one by turning the engine. Anyways thanks again, and is there any certain order/timing? |

When DG suggests going to the "next valve", he is referring to the next camshaft lobe to rotate fully upward into position. It's certainly not the next valve in sequence from the front of the engine. Look for the next camshaft lobe that will be directly opposite the rocker arm pad and rotate the engine a small amount to get it aligned. Then, set that valve and repeat. A chart of the valves is mandatory to ensure that you get them all done and that you get the exhaust and intake valves properly identified because they use different lash specs. |

Oh and I recommend purchasing a remote starter to pop the motor over.

Transmission fluid should be a top priority too. Dexron III fluid. Go for the synthetic stuff, I hear it works great. I wish I'd have gotten some of that.

I am a mechanical novice but I bought Dieselgiants valve adjustment and fuel filter replacement DVD and the necessary parts and went at it myself after some contemplation. Turned out to be very easy indeed. Dieselgiant is a great resource. I bought the head gasket and fuel filters from Phil here at Fastlane. I printed out the instructions on Dieselgiants site and followed them faithfully. Took me five hours but in future I'm sure I'd be able to do it in about one now that I know all that's involved. (or how little acutally).
