did 12v pump kill my alternator?
I bought a 12V pump to move WVO, and attached the alligator clips to my battery terminals with the car running. I used the pump twice for around 20 minutes each time, it worked really well. then my alternator died (it was the original vajeo alt and volt reg with around 170k on them in my 93 300D), my indie mechanic told me the voltage reg was not touching completely anymore and caused an electrical arc that burned the thing that the brush was supposed to be touching, thus necessitating a whole new alt.
did the 12v pump do that? is it OK to keep using the 12v pump attached to my car battery (with my new bosch alt)? thanks for reading |

Sounds like an unlucky coincidence to me. It shouldn't be a problem using the pump.

The alt died because it had 170k on it, not because of the pump.
![]() I've powered far hungrier things off my car's 55A setup without a problem. (Power Inverter with a 32" TV and several lights for a few hours during an outage)

Just thought I would mention the slip ring or the part that the brushes ride against is a replaceable cheap part on bosh alternators. So if you have one that is worn really bad but alternator is otherwise good change it.
