did 12v pump kill my alternator?

I bought a 12V pump to move WVO, and attached the alligator clips to my battery terminals with the car running. I used the pump twice for around 20 minutes each time, it worked really well. then my alternator died (it was the original vajeo alt and volt reg with around 170k on them in my 93 300D), my indie mechanic told me the voltage reg was not touching completely anymore and caused an electrical arc that burned the thing that the brush was supposed to be touching, thus necessitating a whole new alt.

did the 12v pump do that?
is it OK to keep using the 12v pump attached to my car battery (with my new bosch alt)?

thanks for reading
