Tank Strainer Removal

I can't locate a socket that will work for this job anywhere.....I guess we'll have to resort to the dealer....or begging the dealer if we could pay them to "rent" one of their sockets for a couple hours or something...

We're replacing all the lines on the '83SD and need to pull the strainer. It runs rough on a low tank of fuel so I am assuming its got gunk on it. Also, I'll be doing the same thing to my car at some point in the relatively near future. (few months or in the spring)

Anyone have any ideas on this? We got everything else off, but can't get the strainer out.

I just use a pair of channel locks and do it very gently.

When I did mine, the strainer came out when I tried to remove the hose. (The hose fitting was tighter to the strainer than the strainer was to the tank.)

Make sure to replace the strainer o-ring.

Been there and failed to do that.

The strainer requires a 46mm socket. But, at that size, a 3/4" ratchet won't fit in the available space.

Channel locks won't work because of the steel ring around the strainer. The nut is below the level of the steel ring and the channel locks will only grip on the tips........no good.

An offset box wrench, 1 13/16" would probably work, but, it's a costly wrench as well.

I might buy the proper socket and put it in the rental pool.........I can get it at dealer cost +15%.

Let me know if you want me to pursue that option. If you've got the p/n for it, it would speed the process.

I used a cheap Harbor Freight 3/4" drive socket with a wobble extension.

(Hint to make this job a little less of a mess: Find a barbed nipple and a 5' piece of clear hose the same size as the fuel hose. Use a pair of hemostats or needle-nose vise grips to pinch off the fuel hose before detaching from the hard line. Couple the ends, run your hose to a container/s release the hemostats and viola less mess. Then you can use the hemostats to stop the flow and change containers.)

I have a 46mm 3/4 that should work

I'm planning on Turning it on a lathe to make it fits, as it's a beefy impact socket.

If it's worth the drive...

I found a cheap (Taiwan) 1 13/16 3/4 short body socket at NAPA that works fine on a 123. I don't know if a 126 would be different.

No dice, they said they don't carry them. Only a 3/4" drive 1 - 13/16" socket....for $41!!

Looks like I will have to grovel and beg at the dealer to borrow theirs.

I got one at Northern tools for $9 bucks I think, and then a short adapter that goes from 3/4 to 1/2.

Tractor Supply Company (TSC) has a 3/4 drive 1-13/16 socket for $10.99. I have one but have not tried it yet.

www.mytscstore.com Use the store locator at the top of the page.

If that doesn't work out, shoot me your address offline. I will loan it to you.

Do you have the northern part number? I can't find it on their site by the numbers on your photo or by discription.
