Talking The city says my 300SD is worth $4640!

Idiots, I'll sell it to them for that before paying this tax bill!

These guys are so clueless. They asses my SDL way way low, looks like they used kelly. Then they asses the SD at an amazing high rate. The only book that goes back and covers the SD is the NADA, those guys don't know what they are doing.

The city says I owe them $4640x.03460=$159.43.
I say $500x.03460=$17.18.

They are nuts if they think that rusted out junker is worth $4640! They tried this crap with my friends dads S600, the said it was worth almost twice what he paid. I don't mind paying my fair share but this is crazy.

Hey, I'm supposed to be relaxing on vacation, not getting all fired up about the stupid government tax items. Mine is too high, but my house is way too low, so at the moment I am not saying anything as the difference is well in my favor at the moment. They tried to get my brother for adding a basement to his house that is solid brick and oh built in 1880's. So they had it wrong for a 126 years straight - idiots.

Back to happy thoughts.

No this tax is from the City of Milford, not the state. The state only taxes your cars when you buy them, at 6%! You can't fudge it either, I think its 10 or 7 years old, but anything newer is done by book value. So you can't buy an 03 S500 and write $10k on the bill of sale, they don't care. Not that anyone would ever do that...

Perhaps they would allow an independent appraisal? I have been able to work wonders with those as they overvalue cars for the now reduced to 14 percent purchase tax here. They started this insanity so I feel no guilt about my complicity to reduce the amount below what it should be. You pay for your old car and pay the sales tax..Then a bill arrives in the mail that is nothing short of a stick up. I just am not sure where they come up with their valuations. I now do the best I can everytime to skin them by their own rules. They should wear masks like my dentist does. I told him once if I charged like he does I would wear a mask too.

Actually it should be:
“If the law supposes that,” said Mr. Bumble,… “the law is a ass—a idiot. If that’s the eye of the law, the law is a bachelor; and the worst I wish the law is that his eye may be opened by experience—by experience.”

...but hey !

Just remember the girls in the office are just the lil worker bees dont make the rules and it is not thier fault
It be interesting to try and get that money from your insurance if your car was in an accident
How much they say your SDL is worth
No city taxes up here in God's country of NH Conn is getting a lil more like Nj every day way too many people all thinkin they are the only ones there
In AA they have a saying " I may not be much but I'm all I think about"

Here in WV, you pay 5% of the sale price, which you fill in yourself if the seller was kind enough to leave it blank on the title, (not that anyone would fill in a lower dollar amount or anything like that), but then we have to pay the county some piss poor tax on the assessed value, and cant get the license renewed without proof that its paid.

I bought a new cavalier in 2004, with a sticker of 10,400 and those nazis tried to tax me at an assessed value of $14,500. That one was so rediculous that I actually one that fight with the county.

When I went to register my car in KY, they wanted to do it by book value and not the value on the title. Long story short, they stole less money from me than they were legally entitled. My guilt lasted for less than one tenth of a nanosecond.

I bought an old 90 E350 from uhaul for like $3500, told them I lost the bill of sale, thinking it wasnt valued at much at all and they would give me book value, well they asessed it at about $7500. Needless to say I was able to find the bill of sale shortly afterwards.

Olsaltybastard.....I'd like to hear your "long story short". I am in a similar situation with my 300TD. Unfortunately, all I have is the vehicle and a title, but no "notarized" bill of sale (uncooperative long distance PO).

Thanks!

Here in IL, you pay sales taxes on cars purchased from a dealer. If you purchase from an individual who is not a dealer, you pay $25. No annual taxes either, although there may be cities who do charge them. Also no mechanical inspections. You do have to get an emissions inspection on a gasser every two years, but the state pays the tab.

Our plates are pretty expensive at about $80 a year, but considering what we don't have to pay, I don't mind.

County governments love to overassess high end cars. Case in point, my 86 560SEL is assessed at 6560.00 . But the rate is only about.0233, so I only pay around 153.00. Tried to have it lowered, no dice.
Happy New Year, Dave.
