I have seen many W124 300TDs going in the five digits, especially on the west coast.
Yeah, I paid mid $4k for mine, and I've got to spend a fair bit to get it into the shape of that guys (dent noted too) He's accepting offers, so I'd assume he isn't stuck on the 10K number. He may go to the auctions for his inventory, so despite him being in Chicago (he does say it's excellent, and I don't see any rust) the car could have come from anywhere. I think how it was cared for is more important than where it came from.

I just find it a little annoying when someone immediately starts slamming a new seller cuz he has something that looks better than the slammer's car. I look at it the other way 'round; maybe mine might be worth more someday too.
Maybe you misunderstood my statement. Looking at their list of previous auctions, they accepted a couple of offers in early Dec. ( on an 84 300SD for $6500 and an 81 240D for $5500). That means they sold those cars. Almost a month later there is no feedback posted. To me that does not indicate satisfied customers.

Also note the $1500.00 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. In my opinion one would have to be pretty foolish to pay that amount, non-refundable, and sight unseen.

I do not beleive that it is a private party as 11 distinct vehicles have been listed since the end of Nov.

I also don't think that a private owner would put together an ad calling himself "The Benz Depot."

But I could be wrong.

Anyhow, that car looks like BS to me - for that price it should be close to pristine and that car is a long way from pristine.

After having bought one car on eBay that the guy lied through his teeth about despite my repeated, very direct questions, I would never purchase another car on eBay unless I looked at it first, or there was a way to get out of buying it without negative feedback if it was not as advertised.

IMHO, don't buy a car from a stranger unless you have looked at it first.

I've bought a number of cars, trucks and motorcycles on Ebay without a problem. My trick is to buy close enough so I can pick them up in person (I'm willing to travel up to 1000 miles to pick up the right vehicle). No more than a small good faith deposit changes hands till I inspect the vehicle. Typically I try to get to the vehicle within the deposit period (usually 48 to 72 hours) thereby eliminating the need to pay a deposit completely.

The requirement of a large non-refundable deposit immediately sends up warning flags for me.

im going to go out on a limb, and say that this is from that seller that we were all posting about, a while back, who had the auction up with photos from multiple cars combined into one (i cant find the thread, maybe someone esle can). in any event, i contact one of his buyer, who detailed how he had been totally RIPPED OFF.

heres another auction from the same seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-300-Series-300SD-Turbo-1983-Mercedes-Benz-300SD-Turbo-Diesel-EXCELLENT_W0QQitemZ170063168536QQihZ007QQcategoryZ6330QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

note the, "immaculate" rust on the car.

ah yes, here is the amazing thread:

Lots O' Pictures

somehow, this seller still has no feedback. either there is some elaborate con going on, or buyer are smart enough to completely avoid him.

this seller is a total rip-off artist.

Front end crash maybe?

Do you guys notice that this car has new headlights, side markers and the different colour plates under the headlights. The force tells me that this car may have had a nice front end smack at one time.

TerryS, you go 'head and take the guy's word for the 'no rust' claim.
It's a Chicago car- have you ever been to Chicago, and if so did you happen to notice that all the cars people drive up there look like Swiss cheese?
Rust is like an iceberg. No rust on a 19 year old car from Chicago?? yeh right
I'd be willing to bet big money that I could find some rust on that very car. Might even be able to find a lot. Might even find that the car is structurally unsafe to drive. Forget about the #14 head issue. That guy might not be qualified to assess cars in general, and there is a possibility that he might even be lying. For 10k, I need an absolutely perfect w124, that means no issues and perfect in every way.
I don't even care about w124s so I'm not pissing on him out of jealousy, only because he richly deserves ridicule for that ridiculous asking price.

Bingo.

This is what pisses me off about Ebay motors. What COULD be a good resource for people to buy & sell cars has been completely ruined by shysters like this guy.

Used car scammer might be the second-oldest profession out there, and just about as reputable.

At that price, he could at least find corners that actually (even kind of) match the headlights...

Well ain't I your whipping boy tonight. I have been buying and selling on ebay (never sold a car, but many antique motorcycles, and bought more cars than I needed) since ebay went online. Those suspect of his history simply by his "professional" appearance ought to know that is one of many packages that anyone can buy.
I don't know the guy from Adam, and yes, for the prosecutor, I have been to Chicago. In fact, in the last 60 years, there aren't many places I haven't been. I will confess to knowing little about what any particular Benz is worth, but watched them long enough to know what they sell for in given parts of the country (before buying mine, off ebay).
At least I know who the likely flame war candidates will be.
