Is 32+ mpg conceivable in a 124?

I hadn't checked my mpg in a while (got 29+ last time I checked). The last two tanks, with 4 people in the car on flat level highway, 60 mph and no ac, I got 31.3 and 32.4 respectively. The diesel I have been using is LSD, at least no ULSD stickers on the pump. This seems high, I am wondering if my odometer is accurate. But if it was slipping I would have lousy mileage. Do they ever show more miles than actual?

Yes, 32mpg is very possible. I've seen people get 32mpg in a 300SD.

36 on the hwy

I get about 36 on the highway (just me in the car). I don't think 3 other people would drag you mileage down that much. Once you get the car going, it doesn't take that much extra to keep it going with the extra weight. Another 3 people (wife and 2 kids) might weight 500 pounds total. Maybe 32 mpg is fair for 4 people.

Going 60 mph on a flat highway? I would definitly believe that. I never seem to be able to keep it below 70 so I don't know how good mine could be. Mine had a high of almost 29. It's down to 25 now.... Could be the new diesel, or my different tires. I don't think extra people would make too much of a difference on a flat highway either.

I've done a little over 32 on a tank before ... that was my best mark ever. I rarely get a tank that's all or mostly highway so I don't see those numbers often. But I've gotten in the 30-32 range a few times, and that usually actually includes some faster highway driving, around 70 mph, as well as that 55-60 sweet spot. I'd love to go 55-60 on a whole tank sometime and see what mpg I can hit ... probably pretty darn high.

Usually these days I hit 25 mpg right on the button every time. Same around-town driving routine over and over and over.

32 should be possible. Brian has shown that a good SDL can just about do that. The W124 is lighter and a more modern design so 32 is most certainly possible.

i would think at 55 to 60 you could get in the mid high thirties. but at that rate you would have to drive what, 600 miles to empty the tank?

Yeah I figured they can do pretty good on the open road if you drive slow.

I don't know how you guys do it, I can't stand 55-60 on the highway I think I can get out and walk faster. My mileage isn't as good but at 70-90 I get there faster.

it depends on the road.

some roads i am content to go the speed limit (damn few).

others i am running 30 over just to keep up with the flow.

mostly areound here i drive 9 mph over on the highway.

less around town.

Mileage

My 93 300D Turbo 5 cylinder can get mid-30's on I-95 from New Smyrna Beach to North Carolina on regular basis. I have checked it quite a few times. Mid 30's is what I calculate if my odometer is correct. My trips are non-stop just flat out getting it...trying to get home to see my children.

Oh Yes

I have a 92 300D, 2.5 turbo diesel. I get 32 mpg on a regualr basis providing they haven't added too much kerosene when they winterize the fuel.

I average between 31.5 and 32.5 MPG with my driving. I just finished 539.6 miles on 16.6 gal. This was almost all above 65 MPH with a lot of it above 70. We have very few hills around here so I would think on the flat, you should be able to get around 32. I think all the fuel I have been getting is ULSD too, but I use an additive. Just my .02

Yep, entirely believable. I have an 87 300SDL and my last fill-up ended up with 28.5 MPG. That's running 65 to 75 while on the Interstate, plus running the A/C part of the time. Also, the area I live in had numerous hills and I'm not known to waste time getting to speed.
During the summer, if I baby it, I can get over 30.

I also noticed an increase in economy lately on the first tank of LSD that I have run with no veggie blend. I got 28.5 on my normal mixed commute whereas I almost always have gotten about 27mpg in the past. I was wondering if the LSD was the difference or if my driving habits have somehow changed...
