Exclamation e-Bay....account hijacked.....

G'mornin' Folks,

I logged onto my computer this AM....had 43 messages from e-Bay about some listings, that were bogus.....but e-Bay had caught it....and corrected the problem.....

The reason that I am posting this here is because I have not bid on anything that was not MB related other than a Scientific Calculator....during the past 6 months or so.....

After I jumped through all of the necessary security hoops related to restoring my e-Bay account.....I actually was allowed to speak to a human being.....part of the conversations was related to items that I had bid upon or was watching, within e-Bay......the only unusual e-Bay incident was an item (MB 300D in Chapel Hill, NC).....that I had bid upon, but was withdrawn for an unknown (to me) reason....and then re listed.....am presently watching that item, but have not bid......that car is going for around $177 bucks (reserve not met) as of a few moments ago......

I am not posting the link, because I don't know if this is related to my account hi jacking......just mentioning it because it is the only unusual activity of any kind related to anything that I have done within e-Bay.....

I use the same handle "Shorebilly" over there as well.....

I sincerely hope that my problem is not related to any items that I have bid upon, or sold....but especially the Mercedes Benz stuff.....

SB

I have received plenty of bogus emails telling me that my Ebay (and Paypal) account had been hijacked. But they were all just phishing for my personal information, password, etc.

Be careful.

there is a specific address that any true ebay correspondence comes from, and it should also be within your ebay "messages" as well. be careful.
im from chapel hill. i swear i have seen this car before, but if its the same car im thinking of, then someone is selling it for Sarah(owner). I really dont think that something is fishy with the auction.

Is it possible you replied to an official looking email from Ebay at sometime in the recent past that required you to submit your username and password. To hijack an account the dirtbags have to either figure out or trick you out of your password.

It is difficult to tell the phony "Phishing" emails from a real one until you look at the address that the links within the emails go to.

Any official Ebay email can also be found copied to the "My Messages" section of "My Ebay"

I have seen the sort of thing which TangoFox007 mentions.. VERY official looking ...but NOT VALID....

HERE is what to do anytime something is suspect...like they are emailing you about something you are not involved with ( sometimes shown in the title )

IMMEDIATELY forward ( delete nothing from it and don't answer it )
it to

SPOOF@ebay.com

they will send you a confirmation and thankyou for sending it...

The easiest way to tell a fisher is to look at the url the login link sends you to. If there is a login form in the email you can view the source find the
tag and look for its action.... Any of these urls should ALWAYS end in ebay.com or whomever you expect it from. I work for large webhosts and you would be surprised at the number of morons that will give out their credit card pin number.

Thanks Shorebilly...I have been getting a lot of that official looking stuff ....
They even have item numbers listed....
When you go to ebay and search under the item number nothing is there....
Thanks again for the heads up...

Neither EBAY nor PAYPAL (same company...) will send you an email without YOUR NAME in the email. not your email adress, not your username. it will be your actual name. also, ebay and paypal will NEVER send you an email that asks you to click on a link to get to their site to fill in info. they will always tell you to go to their site and login to your account, THEN remedy the problem they are asking about.

Always, always, always check to make sure the message shows up in your ebay message box as well. The gf's mom a while back got several bogus emails saying that her account had been hijacked. I don't remember if she replied to them or not, but none of those messages were in her ebay message box, which they should have been if they were really from ebay.

I get those all the time as well. You can also use dnsstuff.com to do an IP address look up, and trace back. You will usually find it is either a spoofed IP address, or it will take you to some where in Russia or Europe.

I made the mistake of answering one, and promptly contacted PayPal. I changed all my info, then went back to the phisher and gave them all sorts of bogus info.

So, now I just give them bogus stuff like B. Y. Temey for a name and bogus CC numbers like you see printed in ads.

That is generally true. But the fact that the email contains your name does not ensure its authenticity.

All communication that is real should be done by signing onto Ebay then read your ebay mail. I got trick early one morning when I wasnt wake yet.
I got an email saying I was outbid on something so clicked on the link and it prompted me to sign in. I realized it just after I signed in so I changed all of my passwords as fast as I could.

The bad guys are always working on ways to get your $$.
