Hello new here.

Hi, Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. I drive a Mercedes 300SD.

Im looking to get new exhaust because my dad told me I need to get a new one, so I was thinking I might aswell do a complete replacement from the turbo to the back. Should I do a straight pipe or add a resonator in the middle?

I want to use a muffler too because I dont want it to sound very loud as I drive around town. Also will there be back pressure issues if I do straight exhaust with a resonator and muffler or just a muffler. Im not sure if it will harm the car or not, and will this improve my MPG.

Still a few more questions, I was looking at this intake system for the 300sd on the internet, it's just a 35 degree bent chrome pipe with a cone filter coming off the turbo, is this safe for the engine.
I think it looks alot better than the stock thing they got on there and it rattles and shakes haha. Will this also provide better economy?

Im asking you guys because my dad will just get mad at me for asking about this, he's an engineer and finished school for mercedes. Pretty much a doctor for any diesel Mercedes lol, Mechanics call my house all the time asking him questions, but he only works on our cars at home and teaches me.

We do engine swaps and those things and he just built a 240D Motor from scratch in the Garage recenlty, so I dont really want to bug him about these "aftermarket" parts I dont think he will have the correct answer and wont be too delighted about me doing this or interested, but I just want to know.

The reason Im asking is I saw the Mercedes Diesels from Finland and my jaw just dropped to the floor. If someone can direct me to a website or thread where I can read about these aftermarket parts for the 300SD, and how to get a bit more power out of them and also have fuel economy that would be great, and if I blow this engine up it wont matter I have a few laying around.

I just want to get more educated and ready to answer questions from my dad, because once I get him interested he will help me to pretty much do whatever to the 300sd Engine.

welcome to the forum!, as far as the exhaust it basically personal preference. I plan on running straight pipes on my SD when my muffler goes.It will not hurt compression or anything else. With turbo diesels it is actually better to have a free flowing exhaust.
As far as the cone filter instillation, i have one installed on my SD as well. it will not increase your mpg or allow more air into the turbo. however, i do notice that the turbo does spool up faster. " it also sounds extremely good"
Now, with the combination of a free flowing exhaust and the cone air filter. u may notice a small increase in mpg and power."dont expect miracles"
If u really want more power u are going to need to add more fuel along with increased boost and possibly an intercooler.

You will need to add an after market air/oil separator also if you use the cone filter setup.

Welcome! I'm sure your Dad's knowledge would be very useful here as well.

Ok, Thanks for the information.

First thing will be the Exhaust and cone filter intake "stage 2 kit" I saw.

Don't bother with any "kits".

When I converted my SD to federal emissions I used mix and match pieces to run a K&N filter to my intake. I took the breather line from the oil separator and ran it straight into the intake plumbing.

I also have a straight exhaust. It is not really that bad. Another easy thing to do is ad a boost controller. You must have a boost controller installed before doing so.

Look at the "DIY Articles" tabs at the top of the page.

Really from Scratch! with his connections, he may even have been able to get original castings on the block and such! Cool!
