I need to have a new windshield installed in my 300D and also new seals for the windshield and rear glass installed in my 240D. My mechanic recommended a guy to do it -- this is his price quote:

$200 for the 300D windshield + installation
$125 each for installing the two seals on the 240D

I already have all of the seals on hand, so they aren't included in these prices.

So, $450 total -- isn't that a bit much?

Also, he's pushing an "A1" windshield. Anyone familiar with that brand?

That'a about right for California. I was quoted $90 each to replace the seals on my car, plus the cost of seals. Never heard of A-1 glass. Out here we have Safelite, Binswanger, and mom and pop operations.

The rear window is easy. I did mine about a month ago and it took a couple of hours. While I had the rear window out I sprayed the rear panel ( I dont know it's propor name) with upholstery spray and the top of the rear seat because it was sun faded.

In Florida, if your windsheild is cracked a certain amount, your insurance has to cover replacement. How is it in other states??

I just had my windshield replaced. They came to my house and did the entire setup for about $255. They used PPG glass, so I'm happy with the product. As far as sealing it, I don't know that they did an OEM install or not and really don't care. It's clearer than the original (yes, it was made in West Germany!!)

This is, of course, a whole different beast but it's my only experience with such things. Glass America came out to my house while I was at work(told me to leave it unlocked with a check under the floor mat). They used "Pilkington" glass and replaced the rubber gasket. The total came to $150. I left an extra $25 for their being so damn cool about the whole arrangement. I don't know what parts of the Country they operate in but a quick web search might net you some savings. They seem to do fine business down here in the Old South.

Interesting.. My windshield is rather pitted and has a few small chips (not hairline cracks).. It will pass inspection but in direct sunlight it shimmers an awful lot.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I've been reading around on other threads, too, and apparently it pays to get someone with lots of experience on Mercedes. I'm going to bite the bullet and go with this guy. He does a lot of dealership work, plus my mechanic uses him, and that says a lot.

So, goodbye $450!

My 240D windshield replacement was $350 and the installer said it was a ***** of a job. He ran an hour past closing time doing it. Included new seals. The local star independent shop had a junk glass but wouldn't touch the job. It was american made glass, tinted. Here is a free tip. Put cables from your hood to the radiator cowl so when you forget to latch the hood tight it doesn't pop up at 20 mph and smash the windshield. I've never owned a car before with a front opening hood, ************. If they only made 1959 gasoline to put in my 59 Ford I would have quit the whole Mercedes thing right there.

The guy came by today and put in a new windshield in my 300D. He did a great job and was finished in about an hour. Cost was $200, including the windshield (I provided the seal). I'm going to have him come back to do the rear seal on my 240D.

I need to replace the rear windshield in my 83 300D. Is this a do it yourself and would used glass be ok? I am having one heck of a time having it done by a glass shop. They all tell me the glass is not available for this car!!!!!!! Any advive would be greatly appreciated!

W123 Windshield Job

I have done 2 W123 rear glass jobs and just 2 weekends ago I did my W116. The W116 was the easiest ever, taking about 5-10 minutes- it went in like a charm with non-OEM rubber.

Yes, IMO you can do it yourself and you can buy used rear glass out of a W123.

The rear glass on a W123 is thin and the first time you do this will be scary.
