From the OM617.95 FSM:

Quote:
Starting at an oil temp. of approx 110*c the thermostat (11) starts to displace control valve (12), which arrives at it's end position at approx. 125*c. In end position, the direct flow toward combination filter element is locked except for a given quantity of oil (g). This quantity of oil is enough to guarantee lubrication of engine at low outside temperatures, when continuous flow in oil cooler is widely obstructed by viscous oil.
Quote:
On engine 617.950 (W116) a 95*c thermostat has been installed in oil filter up to engine end number 019718. Here, thermostat control starts at appox. 95*c and ends at 110*c.

Kerry,

I had a 1983 240D 4 speed with a/c, I don't recall seeing a oil cooler in it, maybe my oversight.

I changed my leaky oil return hoses on my 1981 300SD turbo diesel last year. The two hoses were $200 and labour was an additional $200. Its a BIG job involving lifting the motor and installing the hoses. My mechanic had a hard time removing the old ones and had to "torch" them off! Also, you need a special tool to remove the bottom hose, dieselgiant.com had a good tip by modifying a normal wrench to get in there proper. Now I have no leak after I park for awhile, and I also noticed my oil pressure is better! Maybe there was gunk in the old lines, as they looked original and I have 432,000 km on the old girl...a million anyone?

Where are you located?
$400.00 for a pair of oil cooler hoses is high in most areas.

it's not that big a job really... if you take out the A/C first.
30 minutes start to finish.
