It could be those. I can't find them in my manual... perhaps I'm looking in the wrong section of the Haynes. Do you know where I could find some pictures to look at and a description of what they are for? They are right above the brake pad enclosure...

try looking in the suspension section. I will go look in my book. I think I have one in the trunk (every car I have came with one, and I think I bought one or two myself!)

since you were able to drive the car straight. if it is the ball joints back there, not fun I bet. but I will know more tonight when I get home to look at my parts car.

John, these things are very little, about four inches in length, and are present just in the rear of the car, right above the brake pad enclosures... I wish I had a more complete manual to refer to...

Sounds silly, but make sure the parking brake is not on. Or just too tight.

I'm very sorry about the delay... something came up and had to step away from my desk...

No, it's not in the suspension section either. These two things (one on each side) are very delicate (nothing suspension-like), more like something used to convey fluid, or something like that. Sorry that I don't know how to convey it better than that...

Definitely not sway bar links, then. They are very delicate, nothing suspension-like I think. More something you snap on... there are no bolts or nuts used to connect them...

Nothing is silly at this point... more than the way I sound... not being able to describe better what I'm talking about...

No, the parking brake is not on. I'll have to check that too, adjusting the tension of the cable as part of the maintenance routine... But I don't thing it is that... When it is on, the engine will shut off if I try driving the car, even when accelerating a lot... then when I disengage it it seems to snap out cleanly.

I'm logging off. I'll be back early afternoon (Pacific time) to check for any responses.
I'll put the car up again tonight and look into those issues you suggested.
If someone can suggest what those links are, or a way for me to find out, it would be really great, so I'd know what items I need and send out the order...

Thanks everybody!

If you have a digital camera, take some pictures. Worth 1000 words.

That's exactly what I was going to do tonight... I'll post them here first thing in the morning.

So, no one was able to guess what the heck those links are? Could be I have the strangest brake system on the face of the earth... (I'm pretty sure that appendage is part of the braking system)

OK, I was looking at an auto-part site and found a picture that quite resembles the one hanging in my car:

So, at last, it appears to be a control arm (I wish I knew what that is for - it's nowhere to be found in my Haynes manual, apparently).
Mine, as I recall, seemed to be missing the part with the protruding pin, above the donut shape... maybe that part broke off it.
I'll also take a picture of the one in my car when I get at it tonight...

Rino, that is upper control arm. Front suspension. I'll stroll out to the barn and check my '81 240D for anything like your talking about. I'll post pics in a bit.

Then it is getting more and more puzzling... Those things (at least something resembling them) are in the rear of my car, positioned slightly above (or on the side of) the calipers... Again, that was the closest resemblance to what I saw last night that I was able to find online... I'll look at your pics... I'll post mine later on if needed.

By the way, I'm leaving the desk in about 20 mins. I'll be back in a few hours...
