I need to get my emissions done this month. Never have done it yet for my 81 300sd. Do our cars usually pass pretty easily, or should I do anything specific to it before testing? Any tips or tricks? Thanks!

Where are you located? My 82 being 25 y/o now is exempt. Yours being 26 y/o should be also.

I am in Arizona. Where are you at? I must have to because I wanted to register for 2 years and they told me I had to get emissions tested every year, knowing I had a 1981 - of course I could have been speaking to a service representitive who didnt know what they were talking about.

I'm in Texas.

Even California exempts 25 y/o or older cars. Talk to some at one of the inspection stations. They might have a FAQ brochure, and then take that to your DMV.

Calif also exempts ALL diesels from testing.

Just talked to the DMV. They directed me to this site:

http://www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/vei/tested.html

It states there that the car has to be older than 1966 to be exempt

So I guess back to my original question, anything I should do to ensure that I pass?

my 80 300SD was at like 8% smog when it was allowed to be at 20% i say just drive it in there and run it.

Same here, I've never had any problem with the Colorado test either. I don't remember my numbers, but they were also pretty low. I would guess the AZ test is similar.

i don't remember my exact number either but i know it was less than half of what was allowed. all the paperwork is in the car.

Mine passed with 8% as well with no ALDA to limit fuel to boost.

The cost was $45 with an appointment.

I don't trust them for anything except emissions testing.

I guess just make sure the EGR is hooked up, and do a diesel purge. There is not a whole lot of emission controls on these old cars. Also make sure there are no exhaust leaks.

Leave the EGR disconnected. It will actually give you BETTER emissions results when it's nonfunctional.

Even with the different engine, no emissions controls, and no muffler/resonator, I passed visual inspection without a hitch. He was actually pretty interested in doing the same conversion to some spare 240D's he has.

i got mine done at some random diesel tersting place on havana right around 1st ave $50 walk in. only went there for the test
