Almost done swapping auto->manual, one problemo, where did my reverse go?
It locks. Its goes into where R SHOULD be. But its first gear. 1-4 shift just fine. Any suggestions?
Also will I be ok swapping the speedo cable from the manual car? The auto has a diff type cable....

Are you sure you have the rods in the right position? I have had too get out the Haynes manual and compare the jigs and jogs to get them back where they should be. There are holes (3) that line up in the shifter end where a pin can be placed when adjusting the length of the rods.

Are you pulling UP on the shifter before you try to go into reverse?
The manual cable will be shorter because of the extra engine length. They should be the same other than length. |

I went through the same thing. I bought a manual 240D that wasn't drivable last summer. I had never driven one so when I went a lookin' for my reverse I couldn't find it either.
Pull up on the shift lever then try.

Yes the R lockout works great prevents me from getting over there without lifting. And like I said It goes into R position but its first gear. The rod donor car was a 300D to the rod lengths should all be the same. I also pulled them one at a time to make sure.
FYI I used the 200D flywheel and 300D axle. No vibrations at all.

The manual cable has a flat end (like a screw driver) and the 85 has a square. My 83 300D euro has a square one too (even thought its a manual) I'll get it worked out.

Must have had something to do with being a 200D. I reused the manual cable in my 240D.

The one on the bottom should be R. Check the Haynes manual, there is good diagram in there.

Just out of curiosity, did you use a new pilot bearing?

I used a new pilot bearing when I did my swap. It's so cheap you may as well replace it.

I used the existing one from the donor car. The clutch had been replaced so recently that you could see all the print (logo etc) on the clutch disc.and the bearing was clearly replaced with the clutch. Car only had 107k on it......

Auto->Manual Where did my Reverse go? FIXED!!!!
It appears that the 300D linkage expects the reverse arm to be in the exact opposite of the 200D. I don't know if anyone else had encountered this issue but I was buggered for sure about not having R. I pulled the linkage again and inspected and was convinced that I had it setup correctly. I noticed that the shifter lever was pushed back quite far and when in this position I couldnt get the shifter to go into R (wouldn't move to the left at all). I adjusted the R arm so what it was straight up and down when IN GEAR and voila!
