Flywheel

Well, I finally got around to putting my engine stand together but Im having some problems with getting the flywheel off. I was reading a couple other posts and I presume that the bell housing bolts are right behind the flywheel accept I cant get the flywheel off. I put a wrench to the crankshaft bolt and another on one of the flywheel bolts but everytime I turn the flywheel it just loosens the crank bolt no matter which way I do it. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

I used an impact wrench to get the bolts off. Very easy, Works good.

Well that is a problem. You should add a compressor and an impact to your wish list of tools. In the mean time, maybe you can remove the oil pan and carefully wedge a block of wood up against the crank to stop it from turning.

You need to jam a device into the teeth on the ring gear. A crow bar works well.

Yeah, I was thinking of that any possible damage to the flywheel using this method. Does this bolt become lose over time because it looks like others havent really encountered this problem before.

You're turning things the right way if the crankshaft bolt is loosening.
Things might go easier if you stand to the left of the engine-as viewed from the flywheel- and loosen the flwheel bolt positioned at 3 o'clock.
You still need to hold the flywheel, though.

Alright, as of now the engine is just sitting on my floor so any time I try to loosen the bolts up the engine just wants to tip. I think Ill lift the engine up shove somthing in the flywheel case and go from there. I just hope I wont strip the bolts.
Thanks,
Mike

Your crank bolt was way loose if it gave before the flywheel bolts. When I removed mine I did it the same way you were doing it.

Ya mine came off without much of a problem. You can get an electric impact free rental from almost any parts store.

Do you have a good engine stand? With the oil pan off, a 4x4 piece of wood wedge against the crank and the block is a great way to go. BTDT with a gasser.

crank bolt is torqued to something like 350 or 400 ft-lbs, iirc. the flywheel stretch bolts should have given way long before it did.

i use a short piece of angle iron to wedge in the starter whole, the edges of the angle iron against the teeth of the flywheel. no probs ever.

Like this? Pretty easy this way- look at the 4 o-clock flywheel anti-rotation device.
