Trials and Tribulations of my first compression test on my 240D!?
After doing much reading the past few days on how the procedure went, I ran into Wichita, Ks this morning(about 50 miles) went to Harbour Freight and purchased their diesel compression test kit(on sale of course for $17.95 or so). I also picked up a cheap mity vac as they had one there. When this craps out I will go to sears and buy a better one. My first probem occurred when I tried to take the wires off the glowplugs. The nut would turn, and so would the ring terminal on the wire. Didnt matter what I tried, I couldnt just hold the terminal. I finally let the terminal turn with the wrench, figuring I would probably break the wire. I was correct. It broke!

If the oil didn't raise numbers, then it points to valves. Adjust valves and report back.

Now that is progress on #s one and four! Good job! Do you have oil consumption or blue smoke?

Funny that you mention valve guide seals, as I already ordered them last week, I have them, but didnt elect to do the job this time around. I was kind of anxious to get it all buttoned back together to see if my compression had gone up any. I will probably do the valve guide seals, next time I am in there. My valve cover gasket I ordered, did not come in with the rest of the items, apparantly it is being shipped from a differant location, so I used my old one. I know, it's a "No-No", but I wasnt going to wait another 3-4 days to put it back together. So far, no leaks around the gasket. And to answer one of your questions, Yes, if it sits for an hour or so after being run for awhile, it immediately starts smoking on startup. I ordered some diesel purge, and according to UPS tracking, I should be receiving it on Wed. I'm anxious to do that job, to see if that helps the rough idle any. Of course, the leaking injector hoses, probably contribuite to the rough idle also. Thanks, for the comments! Jim
