Trying to fix one thing and broke another - door wont lock now

Im really in a bind on this one. I cant roll my driver side front window down on my 82 240d. Took a close look at it today, and saw some physically broken parts so while waiting for a new one, I pushed the window closed and "rolled" up the window to hold the glass in place.

Closed the door, tried to lock it, and it would not lock - key would not turn. I took a closer look in the door panel, and couldnt find anything that would prevent me from locking the door. I tried again, and I think I may have used too much force . I heard a slight "snapping" sound and now when I try to unlock the door, the key just turns in circles, freely turning but not locking/unlocking anything. I also can not push down on the door lock knob to lock the door.

So now I have no way to lock my car and I am not in the best area of town as far as car break-ins. And I have no idea what the part is I broke, where to get one, and how to replace it.

As usual, really appreciate the help. Thanks.

probably just a bent or unclipped link in there that got bumped while in there, all you can do is start looking.

look down inside the door panel and see what parts are lieing in there. If something came off it will be there. Also you could open up the passenger side door and look at how everything works and then compare the two. Use a good flashlight to brighten up the inside. Feel around for loose/ bent or broken peices where the back of the lock tumbler connects with the locking mechanisms. Good luck.

I did find some broken plastic pieces. I am going to take out the door handle this weekend to check out what the broken pieces came off of, and maybe even try to epoxy them together.

Of course I may need to replace that assembly - does anyone know what the assembly is called so I can order it?

Thanks.

Ok ya it really looks like im going to need that door lock mechanism. Anyone know a part number or know if I can hook up some type of keyless entry system to unlock the doors without the key?

Try a bone yard then you can get other things you see that you didn't know you needed until you saw them there in the boneyard just waiting. You can pull a handle and all the parts cheap. There are 2 screws that hold the handle in place, one is accessed from the outside (I think it has a plastic plug covering it) and the other is accessed from inside the door panel. I had to use a stubby phillips to get it out. After you have removed the screws you need to loosen the strike and then you will have enough clearence to get the handle out. Push towards the back and the front will come out. Then you will have to twist the handle up and out to release the metal rod that connects to the tumbler. You can swap out your tumbler and have a good handle to go back in. It is easier to replace with a key that will turn the tumbler so the metal rod will slip in and out of the locking mechinism. Hope this helps.

I personally found that a 8" or longer screw driver works wonders for getting that second screw for the handle.

MB made it nice and easy by putting a hole in the inner door skin just in line with it. Just one more reason I like wrenching on an old MB!

I think I just removed the two big screws, and then used a key that didn't fit the lock to rotate it a LITTLE bit to the right. Once it was at the limit of where it would turn before hitting the tumblers, it slipped right out of the door latch mechanism back inside the door.

AAHHH yes the ol' 8'' phillps that was left on the bench when the trip to the junkyard took place, thank god for stubby screwdrivers and band aids for the scratches you can get getting into those tight ass places!!
