If you mean that if you go looking for cars in the junkyard 10 years from now, I agree. That's why my house looks like a Mercedes junkyard NOW. My local upullit has a 50% off everything sale last weekend - I am sorry that there was only one W123 ( and a coupe NA, too boot) at the time

In my case, I drive about 40K miles per year, so that's 400K more miles over the next 10 years. I will be doing well if most of the new parts that I install now are still working in 10 years. Installing junkyard stuff would be a complete waste of my time if I'm planning on keeping the car reliable for the long term. |

Ok, well,... I only get choice parts from the junkyard for my stash. For example, I only pull starters and alternators that look like they have been recently rebuilt. I have a Chrysler climate contol servo that has been rebuilt with the alloy central section, etc. I have an entire W123 body in detachable sheetmetal and half a W116. I have about 20 wheels ( I just bought 2 wheels with tires with about 90% tread left for $7 the pair) I have spare OM616 and OM617.952 engines, a known good 722.315 tranny , 2 parts trannys for it, a 722.120 and a manual (that will eventually go into the 77240D, if I ever need it, and will free up its 722.1xx)
When I bought each of my cars (other than the '77 240D which is a total backup for catastrophic loss), I rebuilt the suspensions with new rubber, ball joints, shocks- the works. Over the next 20 years of driving, I can't imagine 2drivers using up the remaining theoretical 600K miles or so left on these 4 cars. Rick-in it for the long haul

Seat pads, upholstery. Already too expensive.
