Smile I just purchased my second 1980 240D!!

I must begin by saying that the wife is pissed! I got the whole "white trash" lecture dealing with multiple cars out front. Ugh........
Now, the good news:
I just purchased a nice little 1980 240D, clothed in a fairly faded China Blue. Good news is as follows:
Manual tranny, decent matching Michelin tires, OK interior, not even a whisper of rust, anywhere! 136K miles. Purchased from the daughter of the original owner.
Pictures from the CL ad:

How odd that my wagon, the Squash, and this 240 all have trailer hitches...
This was purchased through the European Delivery program.

Car came over on the "Toyota Maru" in June of 1980 to a port in Houston. Car was driven around some in Europe by the purchasers, then shipped across the pond.
Car lived in San Antonio Texas until 2001, when he gave/sold it to his daughter in the DFW area. Oddly enough, they went to church where my sainted mother goes, so she has been parked in the same parking lot as my future 240D was. Next to each other ever? Hmmmm.....
Now the bad news, and it is fairly significant:
Engine is locked up! Well, you can't have everything, but I do have this sitting out in the garage:

The people were moving out of their house today, so car needed to be GONE. Right place, right time.
I will go back over there tomorrow and call AAA and have it towed home. I forgot to take my camera today. Whoops.
After we agreed to terms and I gave them the $$, they came out with the title, all the original shipping/purchasing info, and a 617.91x engine manual, Maintenance Manual, and super thick one volume Chassis Manual for 1977 and on W123's. (copyright 1979, so info through '79 model years)

Oh, and did I mention what was hanging on the bottom of the trunk lid.........

Wow - lucky man ('cept that part about your wife)!

I'll be interested to read your posts regarding bringing this one up to speed - you're a great writer.

Somehow we need to get the wives infected with this diesel bug.... mine's driving a TDI but could care less

Good show, you really scored, even got the manuals. I'm not even going too ask you what you payed, a nice car is worth it. You should probably be looking for a place in the country with lots of out buildings for cars and parts, or seek theropy, I feel your pain, I bought another 240D last Sunday

That's a nice car. A manual 240D is such a sweet car. Mine had the same options except no cruise. I bought mine from the son of the original owner as well. European delivery also (captain in the army had to buy from the canadian px because of rules about buying foreign cars for american soldiers overseas).

I'm desperately looking for a trailer hitch for my 240 so if you're possibly looking at parting with yours I'd gladly pay you for it

No decision yet, but if I decide to remove it I will let you know for sure.

A whopping $16,635.00, plus what looks like about $700 bucks for the import process.

Nice ride, you scored with all the manuals and even all those dealer books, very rare package indeed!
Guess this means I no longer need to seek out a vol.1 body book for you now, lol.

Nope, would still love to find a vol. 1. This one is cool, but stops with the '79 models. Lots of stuff the same, though. If I found a volume 1 I would probably part with this one. Mine are 80, 80 and 85...

Dang it! Didn't even think about the Euro delivery badge. But I did get something in the trunk that is not shaped like a badge.....

Yep, we loves us some Craigslist!!

Bu7 the wife some flowers. She will forget your present transgression and wonder what else you really did. Should work.
I got away with telling my wife I was just buying some car parts a week ago. Just forgot to mention they were all assembled. Maybe I should buy a 200 acre farm or so to be really safe. It's like the lotto though. You just cannot win.
