I can change a gasser dash to a diesel dash in 5 minutes, so I can easily see that being a donor engine from a 116 SD installed in a gasser, several members of this site have done similar conversions.

OK...I did the "Russian" vin check at MB club Russia and it came back with better info. Here is the info:

Model 300 D

www.dieselgiant.com shows you where the part#'s are on the engine, see if that # matches the motor, I donot remember the .912/950/952 etc part differences. but I think the 912 is n/a, not a turbo.

OK...the 617 912 is a nonturbo. The motor in the 80-300D is a 617-950 so it is a turbo! Now I need to figure out when the 617-950 motors were made.

Let me know how to check the turbo out.

It looks like the motor in the 80-300D is from a 1979 or 1980 300 SD (the 116). I hope that the turbo is easy to service when I pull the motor.

The 617.950 is a 116 300SD engine.
