What is this for?

Rack damper. It helps smooth the idle.

Whatever you want to call it......
it adjusts the pressure on the end of the speeder spring.....which in turn holds the flyweights in check......it may be called a "rack dampener" here.....but it will in fact set the range that the governor governs in.......increasing (turning the screw in) compression on that spring will increase the idle speed as well as the top end speed.....and decreasing the compression (backing screw out) on that spring could cause some of the linkages and pivot points to come out of alignment....especially if there is a bit of wear within the pump governor.....

It's just a pin. The fuel rack rests against it at idle, it does not contact anything else in the pump or have a spring on it (Only inside of it).

I have the old silver styled ones, can I play with adjustment to try to smooth out my idle? I'm not keen on paying $70 for a little pin like that.

Why dont the 616 engines have a rack damper? Its fine with me tho, one less thing to "tweek"

You can also adjust these. While the engine is running loosen the two 13 mm nuts and rotate clockwise or counter clockwise using I think a 15mm wrench where the injector line hooks up on each one until the idle smooths out. Do one at a time.

I think its because the 4cylinder engines are naturally balanced, and don't need to have something to prevent the "shaking" that a 5cylinder engine can have at idle due to the inherent off balance engine configuration. At higher speeds the flywheel/crank pulley balanced weight eliminates this. At least I think thats how it works.

That is strongly NOT recommended. They are very sensitive to adjustment and if they get out of calibration the entire IP will have to be reset on a test bench.

If it helps smooth the idle can it be adjusted safely and how would you recommend doing this.
Is this what you can do by adjusting it. Will it work on a 82 240 manual shift giving it a little more pep. ".increasing (turning the screw in) compression on that spring will increase the idle speed as well as the top end speed.....and decreasing the compression (backing screw out) on that spring could cause some of the linkages and pivot points to come out of alignment....especially if there is a bit of wear within the pump governor"..... Yours can be adjusted, yet the spring inside fatigues over time. You can get a new one for about $50. I understand on turbos only.

Only the turbo 300D's have a rack damper. Adjusting it will only give a smoother idle, it won't affect the engine above that speed.

the 616 engine is a 4cylinder engine it does not require one. only because of the odd cylidner does it require it.
