Yes. That method is listed many times in the archives. Good thinking just the same!

I use injector seals/heat shields and a socket for a spacer.

I did it! (with pics)

Well, the pics are of the old one. I just wanted you guys to see how badly aligned it was.

The 3rd pic shows the surface wear. (I'm sure the surface was good for another 300k mi.)

BTW, in addition to all the stuff the manual says to remove, I also had to remove the water pump to get my homemade puller --an 8mm bolt, heat shield (thx sixto! fender washer caved in), 3/4 npt pipe nipple with a lot of the threads ground down on the end going toward the block-- in there. A slide hammer probably would've been a lot quicker.
