Applied with a very large paintbrush, broadside on.
I did that years ago with a 1936 Ford. When I brought it home, it was about 10 different colors of primer and paint. My landlord, who lived next door made a few comments about it so I went to K Mart and bought a gallon of black exterior house paint and had at it. Shut the landlord up and didn't look 1/2 bad from a distance. A few years later when I sold it, I followed the towtruck up the road and watched as sheets of paint peeled off.

There was a mid 30's Rolls Royce painted with a brush in the parking garage of the apartment building my grandparents lived in. I wanted to try to buy that car but the owner was too ill at the time to discuss matters like that at the time. My grandparents moved out soon after and I never pursued that car after that.
