Skipping/chattering wiper blades?

The car is a '84 300D. I searched already but didn't come up with an answer. I have tried Bosch and Anco, cleaned the windshield with every solvent I can think of and also tried RainX. The wipers still skip and chatter after a few minutes of operation. Any ideas? I have lubed the wiper arm shafts and everything else is in order as far as I can tell. Its a minor but quite annoying problem. Any recommendations? Thanks, RT

Does it chatter in one or both directions? If only one direction, you need to bend the arm so the blade "flip" equally in both directions.

Edit: Use 2 adjustable wrenches on the arm to bend it. Watch the blade. bend the arm so that the blade is dragged rather than pushed, in both directions. btw this will work on any car.

Try using a non abrasive cleanser on the glass. Rain-X can actually make it chatter worse. You need a nice cool film of water for the blades to work effectively. Solvents can leave an oily film which causes water to bead, leading to dry spots on the glass. It's these dry spots that cause chatter. Blades chatter from overheating. Chattering also creates areas of burned rubber from the blades from overheating which accumulates and eats your blades.

I have the Ancos on mine and they work fine.

I am glad I don't have to use my wipers in July

I've also done this one.

Start and stop the wipers with the key at various angles of sweep and note the blade position. Some judicious beding can make quite a difference!

I have used BON-AMI. Its a pumice cleanser that is safe for glass (you should test on small area first). First thing to check is to make sure there is enough tension holding the blade on the glass, if there is, clean the windshield with BON-AMI, it will cause the water to sheet up on the windshield (make sure you wipe the blades with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue). The sheeting action acts as a lubricant for the blade and will eliminate the chatter. I wet the glass down, sprinkle BON-AMI on the glass and wipe with wet sponge. The BON-AMI will take on a paste like consistency. Rinse thoroughly with running water. I usually do this after I wash car, and then give entire car a final rinse.

Huh, that makes scents, I've been pondering this annoying problem for a while with my truck, I'll try your fix, Thanks.

Let us know how it works out. Ideally you want to adjust them with new wiper blades and while under actual operating conditions (raining).

This is driving me nuts. I have a new windscreen, new wiper blades, and the driver side chatters on the return. Basically renders my washer fluid useless.

Is bending the only solution?

Shern, I assume you're tried different brands of wipers, but, I just installed some Michelin wipers from Costco and they are very quiet. Worth a shot if you haven't already.

I have.

It’s the mechanism itself, unfortunately... and only on the one side.
