Euro Light Questions for the Pros
Hey Everyone,
I have a 1985 Euro 300TD that was federalized when it was imported in the 1980s. I wanted to return the car to a more original appearance and get better lighting at the same time. I picked up a great set of OEM square Euros on ebay and now I have some questions. 1. My cars still appears to have the original wiring harness plug with six holes in it, but I only see four of the holes with contacts in them and my new lights have five prongs on the back . Do I need to change anything? 2. I would like to put new bulbs (main and fog) in the new lights. What would you recommend and where should I get them? 3. When my car was federalized they changed the sockets on the front turn signals to the three prong socket and did a pretty ugly splice to get the third wire and connect everything up. In addition the the square lights I also got a set of turn signals that came with the European two prong sockets. What does the third prong do on the US socket and do I really need whatever that feature is for? 4. Finally, on my new lights, there appears to be a very small auxiliary bulb just below the main bulbs. What is the little bulb for? This forum is great! Thanks for all of the help! |

Here is a LINK in the DIY articles section of the forum that will be of help to you in regards to your lights and connectors. Part numbers are included for replacement connectors - don't forget to read the comments section.
The lights can be purchased here in the parts section. I believe the smaller bulb you are referring to is daylight running lights.

I think that those small ones are called "citi lights".
There is a tradition in Europe of parking at night and leaving those turned on as markers. I have often also seen drivers at night with no headlights on-only these citi/city lights and other parking lights turned on. I guess that the thinking is that, if there is enough ambient light (from street lights, buildings, etc.)in a city, why bother everyone with the glare of headlights.
I was in Italy late this spring and puzzled on the autostrada by cars that would pass me on the left and then move to position that straddled the left and right lanes. They blinked their turn signal-the left one-precisely once!
