Video of my diesel engine running without a car!
Here's the video of my engine from an 84 300D running without any car. It's just sitting in the back of my truck on a tire and pallet.

Thanks for posting that video. I really like the tire as a giant motor mount. I guess that plus the tie downs kept the vibrations to a minimum. I envisioned something more chaotic.

It actually ran quite smoothly.

Runs darn well for having almost no flywheel weight.

WOW!! That's the first time I've ever seen that in real life. My fathers cousin, according to my father, used to do that with small block Chevys in his basement, on an engine stand. I always just kinda thought it would just "Torque" the thing over, as soon as you hit the starter, and could never figure out exactly how he did it. I see now. That engine sure runs well. Is it for sale..?

I always wondered how long you can run engines with no coolant before it heats up?

You can run that thing a good 5 to ten minutes, on a reasonably cool day without any problem, without coolant in it. I've done it before with one of my 79 300CD's. I drove the car around the block with no coolant. The radiator was just in the car, to keep the tranny fluid contained and flowing..
Ever see how long it takes for those engines to heat up? Especially in winter? Even takes a bit of time in the hot summer months, just to reach normal operating temp.. No problem.

I'm guessing you applied 12v on the GPs. It fired right up nice.
What's the plan for this motor? |

Damn, makes a guy want to mount one on the coffee table in the living room just to get some soothing sounds in the evening.

I did mmake sure that I at least hooked up the oil cooler while it ran. I did it mainly just to have a way for the oil lines to be hooked together. I ran 12V to the GP's to get a nice warm start instead of cranking it totally cold.
My plans are to install it in my 84 300D that is currently engineless. I guess I got lucky to score an engine from the same year and with less mileage than the rest of the car has. This engine is a non CA version while the old one was a CA version. The only visible difference I saw was this engine has the vacuum switches on the valve cover while the CA version did not have the switches.
