W123 ACC "sensor tube" replacement?

Okay, for once, I'm asking an easy question!

I did my footwork, and figured out that I probably have a bad foam tube for my ACC sensor, since I did a search and found that I have the proper symptoms. Whenever I turn the car on (it's getting colder!), the heat engages just fine.

Here's the problem:
* Car starts, heat works just fine.
* Get moving, car heats up on the inside. Whew, that 300D can sure generate a lot of heat!
* Car is now sweltering inside! I turn the fan from AUTO to Low to compensate.
* Vents suddenly blow ice cold air, and the heat won't engage again until I turn down the dial significantly. Turning off the car, waiting for a bit, and turning it back on, seems to "reset" the dial.

From what I read on these forums, this is probably a disintegrated foam tube, behind the glove box, right? A forum member recommended "5/8 OD, 1/2 ID H/C PEX tube" to join the two tubes together.

Is this my problem? If so, how difficult is the glovebox removal? I imagine it's just a handfull of screws, right? Is this something I can do without taking off the kick-panel, and simply fix it in the Home Depot / Lowes parking lot?

After this, I need to fix that windshield leak, get new glow plugs, and my car will be 100% "winterized"!

Glovebox removal is easy. 8 or 9 plastic pop fasteners (pop the center button out about 1 cm, then pull the fastener out of the hole). Glove box then pulls straight out (watch out for the glovebox lamp and wiring). Installation is the reverse of removal. Easily done in the HD parking lot.

This may be different on the 123 but on the 126 you can faintly hear the sensor fan running in the number II position. I believe if this fan is not working, you will have similar symptoms.

Went to a local HD an hour ago, and sure enough, it was simple as cake. Popped the fasteners out, slid the box out, and the hose was completely gone. Disintegrated. Missing.

I bought some thin H/C PEX pipe to try and use, but unfortunately, it didn't fit. Luckily, I splurged and bought a few feet of pipe insulation as well (self-sealing). While the insulation didn't quite fit 100%, it connected the two pipes together well enough. I'll get home and duct-tape it, to ensure a tighter seal, since right now I doubt it's sucking in much air.

Does the W123 have a motor for the sensor? I thought the pipe just sucks through the underside of the main blower motor?

W123 uses the main blower, no separate fan.

Now would be a good time to take a look at your air conditioner evaparator drain tube. It's made of the same foam stuff. When it fails, you get a lake in the rear footwells.

Evap. tube failed over the summer. Made the car smell musty whenever I turned on the AC (thank god it wasn't a heater core leak!), and created puddles. Fixed that with a cut-off 2-liter bottle of coke.
