battle of the german cars
I know this is a benz forum, just curious how the benz diesels do compared to their german counterpart Volkswagen jetta?

I'd say BMW leads the pack. BMW it is just introducing a new 2 liter 200+hp twin turbo diesel engine, and their twin turbo 3 liter diesel engine is astonishing. IIRC 286hp.

Other than having diesel engines they aren't really easy to compare. One is a RWD luxury car, the other a FWD economy car.

I miss my old 92 Jetta TD in town - much easier than the SD in traffic and more fun to drive as it was a manual 5 speed tranny.
THE SEATS IN THE VW WERE SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE BENZ SEATS Other than that, the Benz wins hands down in many areas. Especially crash protection and pure snob value.... people admire the star on the hood of a 126........ |

BMW is supposed to bring a new diesel 3-series to the US sometime next year. It will be worth checking out. BMW is now supposedly the #1 luxury brand in Europe, though I'm not sure if that's based on sales or customer satisfaction or both. Personally I'm more of a Mercedes guy because Mercedes has a more interesting history of cars and the star on the hood is nice. Just look at Mercedes and BMW 20-30 years ago. Back then BMW cars looked like regular junk, but Mercedes cars have always had elegant styling. Today they're much more comparable and quite similar actually. As far as VW TDI's are concerned, they are indeed very different from MB because they serve a different purpose. They're much more about economy and less about luxury. I have one of each and it's a great combo.

Anyone have any opinions on the old BMW diesels, like the 80's 524 ?
How do they hold up vs. the MBs? I would think maybe getting parts would be harder, but maybe not?

They are rare and parts are getting hard to find from what I hear, but other than that owners seem to like them.

i love my 1990 passat wagon i converted to td.. all the luxury a 83 jetta lacked.. still pulls 40mpg, 23+ gal fuel tank and i fill that thing up to the roof with crap.. LOL.. also no BS issues a tdi has..
never owned a mb.. just working on a few.. |

yeah, i didnt mention BMW since I didnt think they sold any diesels in the us at this time.
