what's it worth?- 1984 w201 190D 5spd

Needs exhaust work
100k mi
Looks/runs nice otherwise, not much history known but it seems to have been well maintained and kept up.
AC works
I'd be interested in a hi mileage daily driver or possibly doing a TDI swap down the line. If it were compatible I'd love to try to squeeze in my 617 but that isn't an option. Owner isn't in a rush to sell

Without more details, pictures of the non-molested car, proof of maintenance....

anywhere for $500-2500?

We need more information, and pictures.

This is a 2.2? I would say the 500-3k give or take. Would be a sweet starter for a 2.5turbo upgrade

it is a 2.2 I might be able to get it for $1500. Haven't taken it out yet but the body does look straight, no visible rust though i haven't looked underneath it yet. I need it like I need a hole in my head however so it would have to really be worth it for me to pick it up right now.

the 2.2 5spd is going to be the MPG champ of the 190 diesel Mercs, probably even of all Mercs.

slow but thrifty.

My wife picked up the same outfit only with an automatic about 150,000 miles back and it runs sweet. We still get around 35 mpg with it, it's a lil doggy in the winter to start when we get into the minus digits but that's what the block heater is for. She paid $1500 for it and it's been well worth it...when she first looked at it it had been parked out in the San Juan islands for 2 years and was covered in moss. She dropped a new battery in it and it fired right up. I've rebuilt the brakes, put new glow plugs into it and replaced the vacuum pump other than that no troubles whatsoever although the PO did a lil electrical cobbling on it. Oh and new block heater tomorrow...and that's it. When my wife was commuting with it at sea-level she was getting in the high 30's mpg. If the engine is mechanically sound and very little wrong with it...I'd take the dern thing. For that matter...if I had the money to drop I'd ask ya for the phone number....lol.

I just bought one last month! 1984 190D with a 2.2 and a 5 speed, black with tan interior and approx. 140,000 miles. Personally I think the value of this car is in the 5 speed. I paid $1,900, but the car has some issues that needs to be fixed, like the emergency brake and the drivers seat is torn, but the A/C was ice cold.

Get it if you like saving money ,good commuter .Are the brakes firm ,if not the vacuum pump has bitten the dust .This is not a cheap piece to fix if you buy it new ,the salvage yard saved me some money there. The 2.5 motors vacuum pumps will work on the 2.2 also .A simple item for the do it yourself mechanic also.

I looked at it today and drove it for the first time.
Correction- the AC does not work contrary to what the seller believed when giving me a description

The shifter seemed a bit sloppy (shift coupling I'd imagine?)
Entire exhaust was very rusty though a large split is right before the muffler.
engine start/ran alright
radiator fan seemed to be spinning very slowly (about 100rpm) I'm not sure if it is normal for the fan clutch to be working like this. (the engine was cold)
the engine is leaking oil, wet underneath and leaving a nice big stain on the street.
it was loud and felt underpowered, as to be expected.

Interior is worn, wood console badly cracked and badly repaired, center vents in dash and surrounding switches are not mounted
dash cracked
Upholstery is good for age

outside, the paint looks great from a distance, repainted (not the best quality job but acceptable) about 2 years ago, though the trim around the car is in terrible shape, where not missing. every flat black piece of trim has become light grey and all 3/4 window felt trim pieces are gone. (4th is about to fall off- is this a problem area on early w201 cars?)
The trunk was drilled for a spoiler at one time. Holes were filled but marks can be seen even through the new paint.

most importantly, I did not find any evidence of rust or rust repair, looked underneath each wheel well and they are very solid.

So now with a better description and pictures, what's it worth?

body looks nice! But i wouldn't buy it if its got that bad of an oil leak. Dont worry about interior trim and switches, those are all easily fixed. I would be worried about rust, which you said checked out. And the drivetrain

Paid $2500 for mine which is in pretty good shape.

The fan has an electric clutch that kicks in at 100C (I think). Mine rarely if ever comes on. That slow spin is normal.

It's gone. The non-functioning AC is what turned me off mainly. Could just have a slow leak or the whole system could have been trashed with metal shards. Besides I have enough projects now with the busted v12 project.
