Question Just picked up a 1985 300TD, love it but...

I have just picked up my new to me 1985 300TD with 235,000 miles, no rust and complete history including recent short block replacement. It already has a Greasecar WVO conversion so I drove home on grease. It has been great to use the WVO instead of fossil Diesel, but there are a couple of issues that I need help with.

1. The shift from 1-2 up and down is a bit of a jolt
2. The engine has a little bit of a rough idle and will not always shut off with the key.
3. The A/C does not blow cold air. Any quick things to check on this would be apreciated.
4. The Cruise Control does not work. Also any quick ckeck items ?

Any help is very much appreciated.

1. Jolting upshift from 1-2 is normal, but there are a few things to check, starting with point 2

2. You may have a vacuum leak. You will need a mity vac to diagnose. Hard tranny shifting is also caused by lack or reduction of vacuum.

3. Check freon levels and check for compressor engagement. The '85 introduced the Klima relay in the A/C mix.

4. No quick checks really. Biggest culprit tends to be the CC Amp which is hidden by the driver side kick panel. It is a silver rectangular metal box mounted near the brake pedal.

No suprise there. WVO unheated will cause bad things. Unfiltered to. Sounds like you just bought some other hippies problem car.....

Driving on WVO means you are breaking the law and will get no love from me and many others. Pay your taxes to keep the roads maintained.

On my 85 wagon, the CC amp is bolted to the steering column on the left side. It will be easier to unbolt the bracket than the amp. It is a 10mm bolt.

You will find many, many posts on the CC in this forum. It seems that with use, around 150K or so, the soldered connections on the CC begin to fail. They can be resoldered, according to several on this forum who say they have done it.

The sure fire want to fix this (other than to spring for a new CC amp at over $400) is to send it to GDI industries, which will fix both the CC amp and the actuator that sits on the motor for something like $300. There have been no reports on this forum of any of this guys'; repairs failing, so far as I have seen. You could get a CC amp from a boneyard and resolder it and see if it works. It might be a success, and the odds are surely better than a similar investment in Lotto.

There is a vacuum leak or an unplugged or leaky hose if the engine will not shut off. This can cause rough shifting. See Diesel Giant about cleaning out your vacuum hoses and replacing them. Some valves can fail, but first check the hoses. They get brittle and can leak and slip off easily when you change the oil.

My car's shifting improved when I replaced the transmission screen and drained out the old oil, which was a tad on the brownish and burned-smelling side. I replaced it with Mobil-1 Dexron AT.

I have had no experience with WVO. My car runs on Biodiesel when it is convenient to fill it up at a station about 12 miles from here, through rather heavy traffic.

Good luck!

It depends on where you are... in some places you can pay road taxes to the govt on your WVO and then it isn't illegal.

OR, you can use 1 gallon of taxed diesel, and 20 gallons of WVO and essentially you are using an additive to achieve 400 or so MPG of taxed fuel...

Biodiesel

of note:

I know you are talking SVO/WVO... but, I run B100 100% biodiesel. There is a $.50 tax credit per gallon for biodiesel produced from WVO and a $1.00 tax credit per gallon for virgin oil. This is just the Fed... state credits apply as well. It's the law!

There are no state tax credits in Wisconsin. You have to pay road tax on anything you use as road fuel (I think it is $.19/gallon. Isn't that crazy?). I heard this straight from the mouth of a state employee who worked in whatever department regulates these things (sorry, can't remember) who was speaking specifically about biodiesel to a class on biodiesel at a local tech college.

I didn't know about the federal tax credit... can you claim that on your taxes, or does the credit go to the company selling it? If it is the company selling it, then man, the place selling it here is making a killing!

credits

It can be passed on... mine is ...so I take the deduction. I'm paying $2.75 right now, keep the receipts and take the tax credit.
