No, no no...

I've seen many people talk about cutting away the front support to get the engine out. What I don't understand is that people with daily drivers, how do they get theirs out without cutting.....lift it high like Henry said? What other issues does this cause? Anything extra to watch out for, etc?

I'd be less concerned if there wasn't a safety factor involved.

Yes, lift it high. Pull slowly and carefully on the hoist until you can lower the load.

Since you have to pull uphill, you will need to use a come-a-long or similar. It's a two-man job with a big block on level ground with no puller, but it should be easy enough for one man to pull and the other to steer the hoist.

The key is to stay out of the way when you're moving the hoist. I've R&R'd dozens of engines this way (but only on level ground).

Okay, I'm by myself here, but I'm thinking you guys have given good enough advice for me to be safe.

Thanks, and I'll post when I'm done.

Do you have enough room for a boom truck - accounting for overhead clearance (power lines etc...)?? I did that in February to remove the 427's from my boat. See attached.

Attach an adjustable bridle to the engine so you can change the pitch on the engine as you go. If you've got a rental company nearby, you may be able to find such a crane. In my case, I borrowed one from a construction company across the street from the yard.

I just went through all this engine pulling. It didn`t occure to me once the
engine was on the hoist it would be hard to roll it away from the car. I
was on rough asphalt. plus I had the rear on the car raised up on blocks
and the front on jack stands. the hoist only goes up so far,& didn`t clear
the front support. so had to raise up ea side with hyd jacks, remove the
stands. then let one side down, run around the other side let that side down. then lower the engine a little as the car went down. then was able
to remove engine.
Rolling the hoist with the engine is a little tricky with the weight in the air.

when I put it back in, I used some 1ft wide by 7ft steel plates. rolled real
smooth. then it was just the reverse of the take out.

If you are using one of those engine tilters, that short little crank is a PIA
to turn once the weight of the eng and trans are hanging.
hack the darn thing off and weld on one of those long nuts, then use a
wratchet. I think we welded on a 5/8 nut, don`t remember for sure.
but what a difference when I put it back in, gives you more leverage.
Or maybe an impact might be good.

My 2 cents worth.

The radiator support can be welded back in. Cut it out with a saws-all, makes R&R the engine much easier.

Does the hood on those stand straight up like on the 2nd generation 126?

So why all the talk about re-welding the radiator supports? Just stand the hood up... you'll never get more clearance than that.

On a good car, you pull it into a nice garage. At that point any decent engine lift will lift the engine right out. Just put the hood straight up and disconnect everything. No cutting required.

Why would you have to cut the front cross member? These old cars have like a foot of clearance, and on the new MB's where its a little tight the cross member unbolts?

Even hacking an engine out of a parts car, I don't see the advantage.

It's a w116.

Okay, more good ideas. As I was reading about the boom crane, I thought "Hey, no wheels.....so I could just drop it off the axle stands, right?"

I should have lots of clearance, and as for the hood, it's a parts car.....that can be removed.

I saw them yank a block out of an Ocean 53. First they took a saw to the side of the hull and slit it open like a can. Then a fork lift goes in and picks the engine up.

What kind of boat is that? Looks like a 60's Owens from the back.

You have miles, and miles of room in that engine bay. Why would you even think about cutting the body?

'67 37' Chris Craft Roamer Riviera, steel hull. In for total bottom replacement and refit to GM Diesel 6V53. The 427's were original to the hull but the 6V53's were optionally available. Full tanks of fuel with the 427's and you can barely make it from Seattle to the San Juan Islands before you're eyeballin' a place to put in at for fuel.

Only because, as stated previously, it's my first time and I've read lots about people cutting it.
