That is the MAJOR problem. People not paying their road taxes have no right to use our roads.

It's like tapping your home electricity directly to the transformer to avoid showing on the meter or using somebody elses phone line for free calls. Both are illegal and make the legitimate users pay more for doing the RIGHT THING. It's straight up tax evasion, no matter how you try to rationalize it to yourself.

I on the other hand will happily pay extra taxes because people with CO-neutral diesels avoid paying them. Maybe I'll be able to enjoy this planet a half year longer because of those people... It's worth it.

Burning WVO is not going to keep the earth from going into an ice age.
remember the last ice age? what do you blame that one on? dinosaurs
farting methane gas, there were more of them around and maybe a few
cave men back then.
I can`t imagine any one happy to pay more taxes, that is sick. the politicians only know tax and spend and waste.
the american tax payer gets screwed by all the taxes charged.

Take the waste out of government, taxes could be cut.

It is impossible to be "carbon neutral". Even if you could, there is no benefit as there is nothing that it could prevent or alter.

On the contrary.

My '91 300TE 4matic (the one in my avatar) was a good runner, got mid-20s on the highway when new, all-around decent car. The 4matics were built by Steyr-Puch and were pretty much bulletproof compared to the viscous-coupling junk in the 2nd generation 4matic, ... in my opinion anyway.

However, both systems are reactive systems, and pale in comparison to the quattro system or any permanently-engaged AWD system when you try to drive it hard or in serious ice & snow, I finally dumped my 4matic and went back to quattros in '97. Should've saved the German lights and wipers though.

Any of the parts unique to the 4matic (transfer case, front diff, engine, etc.) are worth money, if you convert the car save and sell them.

I had considered using an '87 300D for a parts car to make a newer TE into a diesel, wanted a 124 300TD but I like the later interiors and features, but the task just got too big for my taste. Wiring harnesses, ignition switch and gauges, engine and fuel system, transmission and differential, springs, ... seems the list just kept getting bigger.

If you're going to do it and are near SW Michigan drop me a line before I have my almost gutted '87 300D parts car hauled away, you can always cut and paste pieces of my wiring and plumbing if you want.

Holland Michigan. If you head West on I-96, the mile-marker is approx. 5miles higher than the mileage to my house, I used to make that Holland-Detroit run 3x/week.

I'm easy to get to, but a fair drive away. I'm not sure it's worth the fuel to get bits and pieces, but if you head this way let me know.

Starting to think a little Cruc., if you were to stop over, you would have the benefit of seeing a complete and wired 603 driveline sitting on a cart, an empty ('87 300D) 124 engine bay etc., from which it came, and another '87 300D 124 running. Probably worth the trip with a camera to start planning your project.

I've been careful to not cut any wires unless absolutely necessary, but I did hack the fusebox wiring.

You're invited, I'll be around all weekend.
