Trap cat

You have the same challenge that I have. I'd like to have a "test pipe" made to replace my trap cat but haven't found an extra to take to my welder. I'd rather not have the car down for the time it would take to make one (it's my daily driver). If you run across an extra at a yard somewhere, maybe we (and others are interested) can work together and have several test pipes made.

It would still be cheaper and more efficient to replace the manifolds and downpipe with federal parts.

They will replace the TrapOx with an OxCat in the same pre-turbo location and the turbo, but only if it has damage from the TrapOx.

The 603's get a bypass pipe and new exhaust system because the OxCat is moved post-turbo under the body. They also only replace the turbo if it has damage from the old TrapOx.

Called the dealer a while back, He said that there were no open recalls on the car. Asked about the trap oxidizer and he said, on has had one recall and it is closed.

the gasket that came out of the car is metal with fiber between, and the exhaust had been done with silicone, but not the intake. The new gasket is a little thinner, and seems to be all metal???

If I change the manifolds and down pipe, do I have to change the turbo and air cleaner? reading through the forums it seemed like I would have to which jacks the price up a lot. But I will look at used parts, and see the cost.

Factory policy on the 85-CA 617s was to replace the factory original "trap oxidizer" as part of the 30,000 mile service, at no charge to the owner. That bought them time to develop the "trap catalyst," which was introduced as a permanent replacement. Technically that recall is still in effect for cars that still have a trap oxidizer. My '85 has had it done and the dealer's computer shows it.

When the modification to the 603 exhaust system was created, Mercedes decided not to apply it to the older cars. This was probably a business decision, especially since they had already done (at least) one recall on each 85-CA 617 for this problem.

78 300SD manifolds

If you can find a 78 300SD, it did not have the EGR set up. get the manifolds, they bolt on all 617 turbo engines, and nothing to modify or make plates to plug the EGR holes. looks a lot cleaner.

Find the part number and/or ask the dealership if the recall has been done.

Externally they are identical except for the part number.

I had the trap cat recall (originally issued in 1996) on my 1987 300D done this past spring. Not only did I get a complete new exhaust system, all the way to the tailpipe, but the dealer found that the turbo had been damaged so they replaced it too. Free. And they washed the car.

So what do I do when they said there was no recall on the car? What is the number stamped on the cat, and on the trap?

Yup, I wouldn't spend any amount of time trying to fab up some test pipe when the 49 state parts are SO common and easy to swap over.

To get the intake and exhaust and downpipe, I am looking at about $500, and the fed turbo on top of that. But I can not find them locally. unless you guys can direct me to a real cheap place for used parts...
If I can get a "test" pipe made, it should be cheaper than that??
