Which car are you going after? On my old 220D the rail was held by a pin that was pressed into a bore in the block that could be removed from the front of the engine (the front of the chain box), without a lot of trouble. I believe it had about a 10 mm female thread, and I made a puller with a bolt, nut and stack of washers. I believe I did have the radiator out as I was removing and repairing the head, and once the alternator, radiator and water pump were out of the way the pin was pretty easy to find and get out. With the pin out, the rail is free to come out, unless you have one that won't fit through the chainbox area of the head. In that case the rail comes out once the head is off. Good luck, maybe someone will know the specifics of your situation once we know which car you are working on.

sorry its my 300sd. where is this pin located on the front of the engine? I have a good rail in a parts engine that is not in a car so i can get a good look at it before tearing the car apart.
